o.k. I'M STUMPED CHOKE LIGHT ISSUE

I could use some help
my 82 is giving me fits in this cold weather ,ok but for florida the 40's is cold
choke light stays on
12 volts at choke terminal on carb
truck runs like crud when cold
truck idles really high all the time even when warm
oil pressure on gauge says 35lbs at idle
oil level is good
As i understand it the choke circuit runs through the oil pressure switch
so it only works when engine is running and low oil level or pressure can
cause open circuit, choke light to come on and no voltage to choke
power lead BUT I have a choke light on and voltage at the choke terminal

I realize I just have something backwards in my head or am missing something obvious but this is my daily driver and I'm out of ideas
any hep would be welcome
MArk

Hey Mark I know you have 12 volts to the choke heater but is it actually working enough to cause the choke to come off when the engine warms up?

Re: o.k. I'M STUMPED CHOKE LIGHT ISSUE

my guess is that the carb is stuck on high idle. once teh truck it up to normal operating temperature, try disconnecting the choke hot lead, and wire the choke flap fully open. also some pics of your carb before and after it's warmed up will help as well.

Re: o.k. I'M STUMPED CHOKE LIGHT ISSUE

I will check it all again in the morning when cold
just for informational my radio is suddenly blowing the fuse
for no reason I can see . Don't think it could be related but
throwing it out there
this is a 90k mile all stock to the last vacuum hose original
any guesses would be welcome
p.s. dont see any vacuum leaks or bad hoses but it's
a spaghetti factory under there
the choke is not working correctly but it runs
differently depending on the day and I'm not
wanting to throw a bunch of parts at it guessing
Mark

Re: o.k. I'M STUMPED CHOKE LIGHT ISSUE

Sounds like raws67 hit the nail on the head.. I would pull your electric choke off the truck and bench test it using a good car battery. Mark the position of the choke tension spring (coil) before and after the battery power is applied. It should move between 1/6 and 1/4 turn, and this should be plenty to pull your choke off fully. If the choke coil tests good then you know you have a power problem, first check the connection at the oil pressure switch (more than likely it is either a bad connection, or has come off.) Lemme know what you find.
also these are all symptoms of the choke not pulling off, and the light being on is more than likely a faulty connection...
choke light stays on
truck runs like crud when cold
truck idles really high all the time even when warm

El Gracho
The missing piece I didn't realize the choke terminal wire got power
anytime the key is on . just doesn't have enough power to overcome the
resistance to move the coil. got it ,now maybe my pea brain can fix it
