Question OPTION FOR '72 NOT HEARD OF

I have a 1972 Chevy pickup fleet side that has the original sticker in the glove box. One of the options is “1YG820 – Promotional Option”. Do you or anyone you know have any idea what this option consists of? I have been told that this option is one in which Chevrolet took a few hundred (thousand?) trucks and repainted them orange/white and put in a 454 ci motor and TH-400 AT to see if the public would buy such a half ton, fleet side, long bed pickup. The truck came stock with front disc brakes, AC, tilt and the Custom Deluxe package. The emblem on the fender still says 8-350 but the sticker in the glove box still says green/white paint also. I can find no evidence at all of any green paint, inside or out. Chevrolet does not have any record of this option. I’ve tried. Please help if you can.

I think that 454 stuff is a myth. Some people say some late 72's came with a 454, but nobody seems to have any hardcore proof. It's possible that someone actually repainted your truck the right way, and didn't leave a trace of the old paint.

The only promotional item that I've ever seen on the 72's is the "highlander interior" option.

What do your seat and door panels look like?

Seats are aftermarket buckets and the door panels just look like stock panels you would find on any old '72.

That sounds like the Highlander option. It included special (IE wild 70's colors) cloth plaid inserts on the bench seats and special wheel covers. It was something they did to boost sales towards the end of the 72 model run.

That is a highlander package you have there. There were no 454,s, and you could get any color you wanted. Your truck has probally had a color change sometime in its life. Here are some pics of a highlander brochure I got at a swap meet last week. I hope these are clear.

Re: options

Here's my 72 Highlander SPID and mine definately had a 350 in it and I still have it. It has a 454 in it now but I put it there. I'm guesing the 1YG820 as well as the 1Z6260 are all part of the Highlander option.

Re: options

No, actually it was taken at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD. Also, my sticker doesn't say anything about Highlander on it. I will post a pic of that when I get back from Afghanistan. Thanks for all your imput.

Re: options

They often don't specify "Highlander" but it'd the only special promoti0nal package offered by the factory in '72. I will list it as A,B,or C. Each group offered increased features for more money from the one prior. This was the first of what came to follow in packaging of options at a discounted price. The door panels will be the Custom Deluxe molded w/scroll and stainless trim. All interiors were Parchment and all carpet was black.

Re: options

I need to re-do it, but it was that way when i got it. I believe it has 2" lowering coils in the front and rear and a 2" block between the rear axle and bars.
