Re: olds 455 from previous project
olds made a good motor. You will need the olds trans too because if memory serves correct the bell housing is slightly different in the position of the top two bolts. It would mate right up if your truck is a GMC
Its a swap that id do if i had the start to it like you do

do it. Those motors are torque pigs. Different motor mounts but easy to fab. I would do it if I were you.

Re: olds 455 from previous project
Aren't the motor mounts for short and tall deck Oldsmobile the same ? If so, get motor mounts from a truck that had the 350 Olds diesel. I've seen a 350 diesel truck with a 403 swapped in.
Should be a cool swap, GMC used the 455 and 403 in their motorhomes.

Re: olds 455 from previous project
There was a 2wd SWB running around here with a Olds 455. I haven't see it in a few years. I would do it in a heartbeat if I had a good motor sitting there.
For those who are wondering....Olds used a BOP (Buick,Pontiac,Olds) bolt pattern on the trans. They make adapters BOP to Chevy and vise verse.

Re: olds 455 from previous project
I had an olds 455/TH400 combo under the hood of my old 74 c10 and let me tell you that sucker was a torque MONSTER!!! Had 3:07 gears in the rear end and at 70 mph on the highway I could pump to full throttle and back and get the front end to start bobbing up and down hard enough once that I actually scraped the cross member on the highway! LOL After that I decided that was NOT a good idea.
If'n ya want any pointers let me know and I'll help ya out as best I can from here.

Re: olds 455 from previous project
Oh Forgot to mention that I still have the cross member with the mounts still on it out back under the porch. I'll get a few pics this weekend when I'm off and it's still daylight up here of it for ya.
Still got the rear axle too.

Re: olds 455 from previous project
I used the headers outta my 74 cutlass in my truck fit easy enough and had plenty of clearance as well.

Re: olds 455 from previous project
I bet there a good chance of them working. G-bodys are pretty tight in the frame rail area, Trucks "Should" have a mile of clearance.
But if you have a welder every thing fits....... ![]()

G-body's never had big blocks from the factory. Though it is a popular swap

Re: olds 455 from previous project
I would do that swap in a heartbeat if I already had the engine and transmission. There are lots of old diesels around with Oldsmobile engines in them around here. I see at least one every time I go junkyarding. They are the ones with the giant weird looking engine and the hydroboost master cylinder.
![]() I used to know a guy with a 400 Pontiac in his C10. It was what he had when his SBC gave out... Slonaker |

Re: olds 455 from previous project
Put a olds 455 in my 2 wheel drive 10 years ago with a 700 trans. Mated trans to engine with an adapter plate. Too much torque for the torque convertor i drive slower now. Converting to 4 wheel drive now with std shift.

Re: olds 455 from previous project
The olds diesel pickups came with THM400, I have a 79 diesel parts truck that had been covnerted to a 403, but it was shot. Between my uncle and I, we have 2 spare Olds pattern THM400, and he has two 79's diesels, one coverted, one still runing the diesel.
Somewhere in my piles of junk in the back of the trucks, I have the motor mounts. |
