Rebuilding power steering gearbox??
Anyone had good results rebuilding their gearbox?
If the gearbox is leaking out of just the input shaft, can that seal be easily changed without removing gearbox from truck and or without taking apart? If the gearbox is loose, will that adjuster nut take out very much of the slop? The steering wheel has maybe a 1/4 turn of play. A rebuilt gearbox is $160, rebuild kit is $45, and the input shaft seal is $10. Just trying to find the cheapest but yet still good choice. Thanks Bryan

Re: Rebuilding power steering gearbox??
You do have to take the box off the truck to change that seal. You actually have to take the box all the way apart to replace it. I did mine this past winter with a $10 seal kit and somehow, I didn't get it fixed because it still leaks. It is a pain to put back together, I used some online how-to's. All I can say is good luck, or try to find a junk-yard box that isn't leaking. You may have better luck than me.

Re: Rebuilding power steering gearbox??
I replaced the input shaft seal on mine just last week. It was leaking badly, now no leak at all. You do not have to disassemble the entire gear box to replace the input shaft seal. You do have to remove the input shaft though. You could probably do it on the truck but IMHO it will be much easier with the gear off the truck. I followed instructions from here just to get the input shaft out.

Re: Rebuilding power steering gearbox??
Thats a good write up on the box. I thought you had to take it all apart to get it re-assembled correctly. I wish I had known that before I tore mine all apart. Learn something new everyday! Does the year of box change much? Is a '71 box built the same as a '85? The box I have is off a '85 2 wheel drive trk. Good luck!

Re: Rebuilding power steering gearbox??
A Saginaw box is pretty much a Saginaw box. Doesn't matter if it is off a GM, AMC, Ford etc. There are minor changes with year and application but for the most part the internals are the same.

Re: Rebuilding power steering gearbox??
Glad I found this, thanks for that link. My box just started leaking 2 days ago. My steering is nice and tight. Have to figure out where it's leaking though.

Re: Rebuilding power steering gearbox??
Changing out the shaft seal is easy. Click on my build thread for a "how to". If your steering is sloppy, buy a rebuilt box.
