I'm not sure. I was suppose to go up and visit him today in my '69 but it's raining. I may drive something else and head up anyway. I will let you know. Ted

Re: Whats the procedure for cutting front springs..
Instead of cutting one coil from the bottom, would it be better to cut half a coil from the top and half a coil from the bottom?

The bottom (only) can be cut. The top has a smaller pigtail end that fits up in the crossmember, and matches up to a "D" shaped piece of steel. When you have the spring out,... look up in the spring pocket and you will see it.

Re: Whats the procedure for cutting front springs..
I chopped the coils on my impala and iwas told to put the cut ends up top.Big mistake! One side worked its way up into a little opening in the frame and that side wouldnt move.I had to take it apart took me about two days to pull that spring out of there.

Re: Whats the procedure for cutting front springs..
Just an FYI for anyone considering cutting a coil spring. There are several ways to cut them, and as mentioned always avoid excessive heat. I have used many of the methods mentioned. One that wasn't mentioned is a "tile" blade in a circular saw. A tile blade is essentially a thin abrasive disc like those used in a cut-off tool. This is larger and made with the correct style arbor so it fits properly in a circular saw. If you don't have anything else to do the job, that old Black and Decker or Skill saw will work just fine.

Re: Whats the procedure for cutting front springs..
I used a cut-off wheel in my 4 1/2" side grinder to cut mine. (brand name--METABO 'original slicer' is the deal!) Here is a photo for reference, it has 1/2 coil removed and 2 1/2" drop spindle. 5" drop springs on the rear.
I did this suspension mod during the build and then it went to the alignment shop, had it aligned, all was good...
