Not exactly sure but by looking at the rest of the truck it must be between 73-80.

It's hard to tell from the pic, but it appears to have a yellow stripe in the inset area. If that is tru, then I will assume that the GMC is the same as Chevrolet, and say it is a 77. The yellow trim insert was a one year only color for 1977 Chevy, and (I assume) GMC too.
Here's a pic of the Chevy Cheyenne version on my 77-

its off a 77 GMC.. the cheyenne equivalent (forget the name).. I have one from a 77 cheyenne that is identical, and since my project truck is a GMC, i scoured ebay for a GMC one and finally found one off a later model GMC.. the lettering is that bright red color which looks really good, but the border around the trim was black so I used some paint remover and took it off, and thats what I run on my truck now..
I have always thought that was the best looking tailgate trim. I like it better than the larger panel on the silverado/sierra classic tailgates too. mike |

Thanks guys! The tailgate is off of Chevrolet Cheyenne (came w/ the truck) & I luckily found the trim band on a completely decimated GMC @ the yard (only the bed was recognizable) last weekend. Curiosity was gettin' the best of me.....besides, the guys on here devalued my truck due to later model tuen signals!!

The guys are right; the ochre coloring confirms that it is indeed a 1977, and the trim designation was the Z84 High Sierra (GMC equivalent of the Chevy Cheyenne). The narrow band tailgate trim was included and only available with Z84 trim level between and including model years 1975 thru 1980. Of course, in all those years except for 1977 the paint strip color was black.
