Re: custom dash turn signal indicators?

Mine uses indicator lights from Radio Shack and Ron Francis.

These are the turn signals:

And the indicator lights in different colors. Blue for high beams, yellow for fast idle, red for wig/wags:

Re: custom dash turn signal indicators?

I'm using the original light tubes and using the same green lenses over the bulbs that I have on my gauges. I just have two holes drilled - one to the outside of the volt meter and the other to the outside of the oil pressure gauge - to make the flashing green lights visible...

Actually I have high intensity yellow Bright Lites on the sides of the rear stake pockets, and they are operated by a police headlamp wig-wag flasher. We used to live on a very dangerous corner and every available warning device was needed to keep from being crashed into. They're somewhat inconspicous during the day, but with the yellow lights blinking back and forth and 6 red lights blinking off and on it looks like an ambulance from the back at night and demands a lot of attention. I was very thankful I hadn’t removed them when a friend broke down in the middle of a 2 lane road at 11 pm with no lights at all, and I needed to pull him out. People really slow down to see what's going on.

The red lights on the back of the cab act like a 3rd (&4th) brake light being tied in to the brake/emergency flasher circuit. The yellow lights are the wig-wags.

It’s actually surprisingly short. With a 2.64 low gear and 4.09 rear axle it gets up to 88 mph and goes into warp drive with amazing speed!

Cool. Signal Stat used to make a 3 blade flasher that you could get at NAPA years ago by asking for a school bus flasher. Not much more money than the standard 2 blade. Is that what you used by any chance?
Back in the 70's I worked for a Police Dept contract wrecker service and I wired several of the wreckers with wig-wag headlights using these flashers.

That's interesting, I wasn't aware of the school bus flasher. The version I'm running is actually for police car headlights. It was the only thing I could find back when. It probably would have been more simplified if I knew about the bus type. My wife was an EMT at the time giving me access to a lot of interesting police and fire equipment catalogs.

Here's a link to the model I'm running. The flasher itself is mounted above the brake pedal on the pedal support.

Re: custom dash turn signal indicators?

It's not hard to wire. You have to cut one of the highbeam wires and just splice into the other. Using two position either 4 or 6 pole switch you make the cut connection back on the down position of the switch. (probably doesn't make any sense, huh?

Re: custom dash turn signal indicators?

I got most of it, use a double pole, double throw switch and connect the spliced headlight circuit through ??? I'd have to figure the rest out by testing. Apologies for diverting the thread, but I'm always seeking to expand our collective knowledge base.

Here are a few shots that show the various details. I haven’t taken any overall interior photos since I installed the dual spotlights. I keep waiting for decent weather so I can get the truck washed up. Pardon the dirt on top of the heater I didn’t realize how it looked until I saw the picture.

The reverse lights are NOS 1950 era Unity Lamps. They use a standard 1156 bulb, but with the shape of the reflector and lens they are blinding from behind. I've included shots of how they look off and on:

They are just the stock 3 screw tubular type that attach to the doors. The original 1960 arms were cast instead of tubular, but the few NOS items I’ve seen are too expensive for my budget. That and very little on my truck is stock so I’d prefer some restorer got the original type:

Re: custom dash turn signal indicators?

I picked mine up on eBay back in the 1990’s, which is the only place I’ve ever seen any. A couple of years ago I saw another NOS pair listed, and a few months ago there was another single NOS lamp. I’ve also seen a few used sets now and then. The packaging mine came in indicated a 1951 date, so they might be 60 or so years out of production.

I think a similar installation could be accomplished with the factory step side back up lights, although I prefer the Unity lights because the lenses are made of heavy glass, and the rims are heavy steel with a beautiful chrome finish. Here’s a link to the stock step side replacements:

http://www.classicparts.com/1960-76-...ctinfo/50-025/

And here’s a photo of a complete Unity set. These could be mine, but I’m pretty sure they’re another pair I found on eBay:

And these posts on the following link detail the fabrication and installation:

To improve you search results, you might want to try the following search parameters:

Unity Light (or lamp)
Unity back up lights (or lamps)
Unity backup lights (or lamps)
Unity 480
Unity 480P
Unity Model C. This is stamped into the rim as shown below. The picture is a little blurry (and dirty), but it is imprinted Model “C”. I mounted the rims with the lettering on the bottom to keep the visible top portion clean.

Of course you can also omit the word “Unity” and you’ll get a lot more results. You might get lucky. Some sellers don’t know these are Unity brand even though it is stamped on the rim.

You might also try Accessoryland. It’s a mom and pop outfit run by a guy named Bob. He’s been very helpful for me in the past, but I see his website has gone defunct. I’m concerned something bad may have happened, but he may still be available by phone. He is the largest vintage Unity dealer and has access directly into the Unity factory. He found my passenger side spotlight bracket in 50 year old unfinished inventory, allowing me to order the part and have the manufacturing process completed.

Here is his phone number:

563.556.5482

I emailed AJ at the TailLight King and this is what he said:

I don't have any right now. I have had some of those and they were adealer installed item on old Mopars. I do have a pair of Yankee 975 lightswith clear glass lenses and I have the original 66 Chevy fleetside Backupsin NOS condition. I have attached pictures of both. The Yankee lights are $25 each and the Guide RU-56 Backup assemblies are NOS and $35 each.

Thanks, AJ

They don't look to bad. I just like those Unity Model C for some reason.
I tried calling Accessoryland Truckin Supplies with now luck. Just kept ringing.
Call back later.
