Power steering?
I need a pic of a powerr steering pulley(Or a part#) for a 250 6 cyl.I have the brackets and pump and can pick up the steering box from a local place reasonable.I just don't know how many grooves the PS pulley had for this app and haven't had any luck finding one intact.

Sorry,I guess I should have been more clear.I need the crank pulley ID.I have a pump with pulley and brackets but it didn't come with the crank pulley.I have a 2 groove one that was on the truck when I got it but I don't think it will align with the PS pump.Thanks for the pics and info though guys.Looks like I need a 3 groove pulley from the pics.

PD let me know when you find it, i am going to need the same thing. I have a bunch of pics on facebook. It looks like each one is different. I am wondering the same thing. The guy i bought my brackets from said his crank pulley only had two grooves? not sure how that worked. I bought the crank pulley from his but when he told me it only had two grooves i told him not to send it. I am wondering now if just a regular 350 crank pulley would work. I will do some research and see what i come up with.

I know this set up is wrong-as far as how everything is tied together-but I have 2 grooves on the crank, but I'm just using 1. I guess it depends if you are running anything else. I am going to look for double groove everything so I can run 2 belts.

Okay Pd, here's a couple pics of my crankshaft pulley setup. Let me know if you need anything else.
BTW, that bolt on pulley on the crank (one closest to the radiator) is for the a/c unit.

I don't have a pic.I should have taken the camera when i got it but I was more interested in the parts.I did a JY crawl yesterday but did not find a 6 cyl.PS set-up.
BTW feel free to post.The more we can learn the more info we have to use and share with others. Thanks Botie,at least now I know what the pulley looks like.I know they also came on Nova's, and other chevy cars with the 250 so maybe I can find one.

I had the same problem with my inline, but finally scored big when I found a 1983 Chevy P/U with a inline six 250. I pulled the HEI Distributor and the brackets for P/S and ALT which is setup on the drivers side. I also pulled off the bracket for the A/C which is mounted low on the passenger side, you will also need the water pump pulley double grove, crank shaft balancer pulley double grove with the timing cover from the 1983 engine due to the timing tab marks lining up differently from the 1971 balancer single groove. if you need pic's of what it looks like E-mail me and I will send you a couple of pictures. By the way Good Luck on the Hunt for parts it took me three months to locate the donor engine. I'm not sure if the 292 and the 250 have all the same mounting hole but they don't look to much different from each other, but in all honesty I have only seen one in the wrecking yard and never worked on one.

You know, I took another look at the 2 250's in my shop and they both have a single groove balancer. All the other pullys bolt onto that. But Botietruck's set up looks different. Is that a non-stock balancer? I know that the balancers for 292's are way different.

I had looked several times for the # for this pulley in my parts manual.I sat down a few min ago and "think" I found a # for it.The one I found is 3900434 but who knows if that # has been changed by GM or if it's even still available.Anyway another "possible" piece4 to the puzzle.I hope I can find one and figure this out before fall since I drive the truck in the nice spring and fall weather and even some in the hot summer.I want to install the PS in the late fall and really just need a pulley to be able to do it.

This is what I was saying:
The 2 harmonic balancers, and the pully that was bolted to the 1 on the left, which is the engine in my earlier post. That bolt on pully bears the number 3790337BE. But I believe your PS bracket should line the pump up with the balancer pully. Do small block balancers have the same bolt pattern? The 1 on this 327 I have seems to be. If so, I would imagine there would be any combo of pully's you could want. Hope that's some help.

Hey pritch looks like you might be onto something there. PD here is a web site for dampers that would bolt on to the crankshaft pully.

I6 250 Power Steering Pump Alignment
I am in the middle of a power steering conversion on a 68 with a 250. I have used Shakeys How To in the FAQ section and numerous other posts to get the the point I am at now.
All that I have left is to properly align the power steering pulley. My Issue: The pump pulley is off around 1/4 inch from the other pulleys causing the belt to want to align directly in the center of the double pulley I have. I have shimmed with washers without much luck due to the limits of the early 250 mounting brackets. I believe pulley offsets are going to be my fix but not sure. Can anyone advise an idea to align the pump with the current setup I have
There are some good ideas mentioned in the thread above but no conclusions. Looking for some advisement to continue with all the great help this site has proved me so far |
