Bed pine
I was wondering if the original type of wood used for the bed is still available? From what I can find is it called Southern yellow pine, but that seems to be a generic all encompassing term.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Yellow_Pine has anybody used this to do thier bed? What did you treat the wood with once it was installed. Thanks Ken Montreal 1965 C10 |

Re: Bed pine
I used some 3/4 plywood as base, then on top I laid down 3/4" x 7" spruce.. All th wood was jus wood I got from wrk..shipping wood..so th cost was low, but the bed looks great.. However make sure the wood your going to use is strong.. I was originally gonna use teak, or marine deck wood..wouldn't have to treat.. But I went the easier route..I can replace any time..

Re: Bed pine
I've used Mar-K pine in 3 or 4 beds so far, all fit great. Hard yellow wood. Paint is about the only thing that will withstand outdoor weather.

Re: Bed pine
Treat the wood with an oil made for hardwood, it will last alot longer than a clear poly or a varnish. It will not peel later like the poly or varnish.

Re: Bed pine
Mar-K did some interesting tests:
http://www.mar-k.com/wood_finish_testing_i.html I wanted a functional bed so I got yellow pine locally for mine and had a friend mill it, haven't installed it yet. I wouldn't use oak for a truck bed that'll see weather and I think the mar-k tests show that. what's available up there, spruce?

"what's available up there, spruce? "
I can get almost any kind of wood up here through local importers, except for southern yellow pine. A friend of mine is heading home to North Carolina for a vacation this summer and will try to bring some home for me. thanks for the input. Ken |

Re: Bed pine
You should come down to the central GA area. We have plenty of dang pines everywhere. Things are aggravating during the spring with all the pollen and they leave black specks all over your vehicle too if you're parked under one. They're not very strong either. A good gust of wind will take them down.
