From this to this...so far
I bought my truck off ebay for a whopping $242. Its a '68 stepside short box very little real rust, just the rockers, door corners, and inside the cab above the drivers sunvisor (how'd that get there?), and some surface rust. It has the I-6 and a 3-OTT, I don't know if either of those works but it looks like the engine has been open (no carb) for quite some time. Here's what it looked like when I picked it up in BANDANA, KY...right down the road from Monkey's Eyebrow?!?

Re: From this to this...so far
After a bunch of sanding, red oxide primer, sanding, grey primer, sanding, and a little trim paintinghere is wher it is today...Still waiting on a driver's side rear fender and a couple of odds and ends. I bought a 307 off a guy that was replacing it with a 350 for $20 and a guy at the racetrack gave me a 700r4 tranny, its gonna be canary yellow with black trim. I Can't decide on rims and tire combo's so any suggestions would be appreciated

If it's going to sit for a while, seal the drip rail channel (name?) with some sort of sealer. Some times the old factory sealer cracks and lets water seep under it and it is a good entry point for rust on the top of the cab.... |

Re: From this to this...so far
HeavyD---What size wheels and tires do you suggest?
BobbyK---That "in-cab reverse turbo vortex thingy" was one of the first tools I employed right after the hand lift I used to remove the seats (which were mounted on a plywood frame that wasn't bolted down) and the shag carpet. 68gmsee---Any advise on how to seal the drip rail channel? I thought about just cleaning it out real good and filling it with bondo and blending it back into the cab. I'm sure there are less invasive approaches. Others---thanks for the comments

On my other truck, I just sealed it with clear silicone sealer used for exterior gutters. I did this as a preventive measure since it was starting to crack and I know it's going to be a year before I paint it. |

Re: From this to this...so far
Well its been FOREVER since I've done anything to the truck. I got into Dirt track racing and time and $$$ were both running low. However, I'm just about tired of racing so I'm back on the truck. Here are some updated pics. New wheels, tires 255/60(I bought them to go on the racecar...better served on the truck), got carpet installed, built a frame for the seats & got them in, built a console, moved the fuel tank out of the cab (put a 15 gal tank in the bed). Made some tailgate chains. It runs now, tomorrow it might even move.
Lets see if I can get some pics uploaded now

Re: From this to this...so far
Thanks, its been a journey.
OK here's the story...My Brother-in-law has a transmission shop here in town. We made a deal, I'm more of a wood worker and he's more of a mechanic, so I'd build him a deck around his pool/He'd get the truck running. He got the motor and tranny in then kinda stopped on it since I hadn't got it licensed yet...well I wasn't getting it licensed until it was somewhat driveable so theres the first roadblock. Its been sitting in his shop since. When his business was slow he'd start tinkering with it and WHAM he would instantly get busy (hence we call it the "work truck" because everythime he started working on it he'd get paying jobs). There is the second roadblock. In the mean time I started racing which took most of my time and money, Third roadblock. Now I'm prettymuch done racing, and I'm focusing on get the truck going.

Re: From this to this...so far
Thanks. its on the rack right now and I was sitting looking at it and REALLY noticed how good they look. These were affordable to...they are 15x8 with the centercaps/lug nuts/valvestems/mounted/balanced the whole set cost $367...I was pleased. One of the wheels that came on the truck is a steel version I'm gonna clean it up and polish it for a spare.

Re: From this to this...so far
BIG changes comin' as soon as I can get some pics...its no longer multi-colored. Actually look pretty good for a driveway paintjob. Its got a few bugs...I posted in the body/paint board asking how to deal with those, does anybody here have any advice on making the critters not quite so visible?
