Black steel bezels or shiny aluminum bezels?

Does anyone know if a 70 c-10 would have had black steel headlight bezels or the shiny aluminum headlight bezels?
Thanx in advance
Dano

Re: Black steel bezels or shiny aluminum bezels?

From what I could tell is that there are two types of grille shells;
One where the horizontol black stripes run into the headlight bezels and,
one where the horizontal black stripes terminate before the headlight bezels.

It seems to me that since the black stripes run into the bezel then the headlight bezels should be black.
The shell where the black stripes terminate before the bezel should have the shiny bezels since they are isolated from the black stripes.

I don't know if the two different shells are year specific.

Since the grille shell that I have has the horizontal black stripes running into the bezel, than I'm gonna use the black steel bezels.

Hopefully some can chime in on this who knows more than I do.

69-70 were painted black. 71-72 were aluminum. Both will interchange however.

Bingo...we have a winner

I have been looking for an NOS set of steel bezels for about a month but no luck. But either will work and 99% won't know which Bezel is correct for which year. I didn't know until I was told--which is why the site rocks. Its a great source for learning.

Are the differences in the grille shells year specific?

FYI,that Pattson site has quite a few inaccuracies to use as an absolute reference. Maybe not in grilles, but definitely not to be used as gospel. 69/70s all had steel headlight doors painted black. The differences in grilles between the headlight and turn signal have to do with a retool somewhere along the line,or being supplied by two different jobbers, and not specific to one year vs the other. I believe it occurred late in '70 if not post production on just replacement parts.

Which one would be '69 and which one would be retool/post-production/replacement?

Thanx

Re: Black steel bezels or shiny aluminum bezels?

you can still buy the 71-72 style from gm part #3990706 $52.88 and #3990705 $29.21............I don't know why the difference in price

Does anyone have the part numbers for the 69-70 style "steel" bezels? I want a new set of those for my truck and I can see if gm still has them available.

Re: Black steel bezels or shiny aluminum bezels?

You can refurbish a set of used 69-70 steel bezels much cheaper than you can get new ones for and the finish will be superior.

I put up a WTB thread for a couple of months recently and non showed up. I got set of bezels that were all cleaned up from 70LonghornCST which I am going to paint. Tx Firefighter is right on about prices...he powder coated a set for me (very nice job by the way) but I stored them in my gargae and I can find them.
