How do I tell which LS motor it is?

I'm going to look at a motor that a guy says has low miles and is an LS motor. Is there a way to determine which motor it is and also, is it a hard install into 60-66 trucks?

I would get all the casting and stamped numbers you can off the block and figure out what it is. Some guys here have LS motors in their trucks.

They will either have a 6.0 or 4.8/5.3 cast in the block. the diff between them all are basically all internal.

You should be able to call the seller and get the motor number off it and run it to see what that tells you.

I have the 4.8 in mine and I like it alot, runs great, very economical and has plenty of power for a daily driver. no complaints.

The 4.8/5.3 and 6.0 will be cast on the front drivers side of the block. The only way to tell the difference between the 5.3 & 4.8(same block) is by looking through the spark plug hole at the piston. If it is flat top it will be a 4.8. If it has a small dish in the piston it is a 5.3.... Now they did make some "H.O" 5.3 motors which had the 4.8 pistons for more compression but I believe they were all aluminum blocks. As far as the 6.0 I don't really know how to tell the difference between the LQ4 and LQ9. They may have the same deal with the pistons as well. LQ9 would be the better of the 2. Also having casting numbers as stated before will help too.

I have a 4.8 in mine also, with the 4l60e . and love it. be sure you get the wiring harness and computer to save from buying one later. ALSO THIS HELPS WITH O2 SENSOR MIX UPS.
