Straight Six to V-6 GMC

Hey everyone. Well the S^$t hit the fan today. I need a new motor. The truck originally came with a straight six, but I have a buddy who has a GMC v-6 for $100. I was wondering what would be needed to put this big V-6 into my truck. I have the v-6 bellhousing by the way.

Nice! I approve. The mounts and maybe the rear crossmember are all I can think of if you already have the bellhousing.

Re: Straight Six to V-6 GMC

Funny you should ask!
I've pulled the I/6 from my 64 GMC and have just put a 351 GMC V/6 in!
You have to have the V/6 bellhousing, which you say you have. And you need the V/6 rear mounts(takes a 5/8" bolt). Then you need the complete front mounts from the V/6,frame stands and all.The I/6 or V/8 stands won't work!My I/6 rear crossmember works.
After this stuff, you have to re-work the engine wiring to reach.Hoses.Exhaust.
And,make sure your trans will fit the GMC bellhousing!
And be careful! That V/6 weighs about 840 lbs.!
I'll put up a pic in a minute.

Re: Straight Six to V-6 GMC

I hope this doesn't violate board policy- (just trying to help out):

I'll be pulling a siezed 305 V6 out of a parts truck within the next week or two and I may be able to supply the rest of the parts you need to get the job done if your friend doesn't have them.

Again- not trying to be mercenary here- just trying to help with what may end up being hard to find parts.

100%chevy-

I wish I had your cherry picker.

Giany-

Look in my signature for the clutch replacement thread, there are a lot of good pics of the V6 rear mount set up. If you need p/n's, let me know.

For reference, here are photos of the V6 frame brackets and engine mounts:

Re: Straight Six to V-6 GMC

Markeb01-yours are for 60-61-62 trucks with torsion bar suspension.
Mine are for 63-64-65-66 with coil front suspension.
4x4's are different too.
There's also a front center mount.
Here's some pics of the different front stands,

The shiny black ones are I/6,ones in the middle are V/8,the ones on the right are V/6.

Good to know. I didn't realize GMC ever changed their frame mounts. Thanks for posting.

Re: Straight Six to V-6 GMC

I wish there were a place where we could store this stuff for future refference!
These trucks looked so much alike for the 60/66 generation that it's assumed there the same.
But GMC had to be different!

Re: Straight Six to V-6 GMC

Corts60-
That's the only way I could move the engine!
I have no front suspension on the truck and that part of my shop has a dirt floor.
No way I could roll the lift to it.
Just do what you gotta do!
Mike.

Re: Straight Six to V-6 GMC

Had a change of plans. I ended up not getting the v-6, instead I found a 292 for sale. I did search the forums, but did not find the answer I was looking for. I know the perche for the 292 passenger side is shorter, but Can I still use the 230/250 perch for the 292 or will there be some huge problem? Thanks

Re: Straight Six to V-6 GMC

I'm pretty sure that the passenger side mount is a 292 specific part.
