Which ATF type to choose??

...need some insights. Is DexMerc ATF any good?? I bought a 'Coastal' brand ATF DexMerc from Autozone for $14.99 (1 GAL). Guy said DexMerc is what old GM/FORD use. Or shoud I get a high mileage ATF? Also, what type is best (Dextron, F, etc)? How many quarts will I need? I am going to drop the trans. pan tomorrow and fix the RTV leak w/ a rubber gasket. FYI: It's a 67 C10 with a TH350 transmission. Mileage is unknown, but I'm assuming it's high.

Re: Which ATF type to choose??

From what I remember the Type F is a no no in GM vehicles. Everything I've ever read or seen says Mercon/Dexron for GM vehicles. As for the high mileage stuff that would be a matter of opinion.

Re: Which ATF type to choose??

...WHEN dropping the trans. pan, will I need to remove the entire ATF before pouring in new trans fluid? I just want to fix the leak caused by the RTV on the pan and replace it with a rubber gasket and change the filter. Will it hurt the transmission if I do it that way (Just refill the trans. with new ATF that is mixed with the previous ATF). The PO I believe put Dot 3, BUT I'm just adding ATF DexMerc, which meets Dot 3 specs as well. PLEASE let me know if this will be fine? I will be doing this after work today. [sigh]

Re: Which ATF type to choose??

You don't need to get all the fluid out, unless it looks or smells burned.
