77-80 pulse wipers- whats your switch do?

Hey all,
I need to ask those with intermittant wipers on trucks between 77-80 only; what happens when you move your switch to the right?
example- left is off, 1st right is delay, 2nd right- slow, 3rd right - fast, push to wash.
I want to know what the factory switch was set up to do?
Thanks in advance.

Mine's a 79 Big Ten and sometimes they turn on by themseves even when the keys not in or turned. Still haven't figured them out yet.

My '78 Silverado has the intermittents and they only work once every 8 months for about 6 seconds. I can't figure them out either.

Ha ha, same problem here. but how many positions do you have in the factory switch? does your switch move left at all?

Re: 77-80 pulse wipers- whats your switch do?

Don't know about your models, but on my 83 it is hold to the left to "pulse" the wipers (the wipers move as long as you hold the switch to the left). Moving the switch to the right is just low and high speed wiper. I never figured out what the dial with a white arrow is supposed to do, but I never saw an owner's manual either.

Re: 77-80 pulse wipers- whats your switch do?

the switch is supposedly different from 78-80 than anything from 81 and newer. I'm guessing it doesn't move left on teh 78-80.
The dial is to adjust the intermittant dealy from long to short (clockwise). Anyone have a manual?

Re: 77-80 pulse wipers- whats your switch do?

I installed pluse wiper on my 74 from a 78 (may have been a 79). There is five positions. Starting from the left to the right:

1. Pulse wipe (momentary sprung position)

2. Off

3. Delay (here is where the dial wil change the wiper delay)

4. Slow speed

5. High speed

You need more than just the switch to make intermediate wipers work. It requires a wiper motor from a 78 late (there are early and late wiper motor) to 1980 truck wiper motor. Then it also needs the delay wiper module that plugs in the wiring harness off the rear of the wiper switch, between the harness and the switch.

If the wipers wipe without using the switch, it is called phantom wipe and the wiper delay module has gone bad. Mine does this when the truck gets jarred from a bump, but I am too lazy to replace the module. The module can be removed and wiring harness pluged directly into the switch and the wipers will operate in two speed mode only.

well that is good to know I think I will just eliminate the delay setup and put in a regular one I think I can live with it seeing as how I have driven my 76 with regular wipers for over a year

Re: 77-80 pulse wipers- whats your switch do?

Great info- thanks.
That left position, do you you push in or push left?
Reason I ask Is I have a short in my cluster lights when I do that and I end up blowing fuses so I was wondering if the left position was from a switch from 1981 forward?

You push it left, not in. Pushing the knob in will move it to the right and activate the washers. Mine is the same as Q-ships.

Re: 77-80 pulse wipers- whats your switch do?

fixed my probs , the back of the switch had come loose
inside a copper strip had flipped over too
one is even burnt shorter
now slight left it will swipe, when held
but i did stretch the spring a bit for more tension on the selector ball
when back together......no squirt yet but it wipes

Re: 77-80 pulse wipers- whats your switch do?

Hey all,
Now that I know the 'Phantom wipe' is from the delay module, I thought i'd share the details and wiring diagrams of my 78 wiper upgrade in the 76. Its a long winded one, but your can read it here.
