Spare tire?

I have a 72 1/2 cheyenne 2wd. Where was the spare tire kept when this truck was new?

under the tailend of the bed was the most common factory option for sparetire

There was an option to keep them in the bed (fleetside) or outside the bed (stepside).

Today most spare tires are kept in the garage.

True. I've been drove my 69 for about 15 years and only had one flat. That's when I parked for a few years and tire dry rotted on me.

My 68 GMC I've been driving for about the same lenght and haven't had a flat yet. If I go somwhere that's out of the way, I've got a small donut that fits and I can throw it in the bed.
