99 chevy 1500 5.3 having trouble starting
My truck was having trouble Starting would start but idled ruff give it some gas it would be fine didn't matter if it was hot or cold. So I changed the fuel filter started it same problem as I was backing out of the garage it died tried to restart it would crank and crank but no fire. Had to work came back a few hours later still crank and crank rapped on the gas tank went to try again wouldn't crank nothing. Put Charger on it came back hour later tried again starter made really bad noise so pulled starter out one of the mounting ears had broke off replaced the starter with anew one tried to start again same noise pulled new starter off same ear Broke off. Put the code reader computer on it no codes any ideas I can spin themotor with a wrench so themotor is not seized up.

Is this a throttle body? If so i can guar. you that you need to have it cleaned.

What do you mean by the "ear" is breaking off? Do you mean the teeth on the starter gear or the mount ears?

Well you may have two problems then. One is you still may need to throttle body cleaned. Secondly, I have never came across an issue where the ears would just break off when starting. You want to make sure that you do not overtighten the starter when you install the next one, also check your flywheel to make sure that it is not bowed.

Flooded...okay that is your no starting problem. But I do not think that is your starter problem.

Check the fuel pressure regulator, Pull the vacuum line, If its full of gas, Replace the regulator.

Re: 99 chevy 1500 5.3 having trouble starting
Yes it very well could be his starter problem. When the regulator goes bad it allows fuel to be dumped right into the intake. Enough gets into the intake and down into the cylinders, when the motor gets turned over with the fuel it hydrolocks and kicks back against the starter potentially breaking it. If not the regulator, which im bettin it is, the other culprit could be injector.

Re: 99 chevy 1500 5.3 having trouble starting
I just replaced the starter in my regal and the new one came with a shim, the instructions said you my need to use this shim, it didn't say why. I didn't use the shim and it seems ok. But your issue sounds like the face that you mount the starter to is not correct and when you tightin the bolt it breaks off the crappy metal ear. Next time dry fit the starter without the bolts and see if the surface is flat. easy fix if it is that.

I agree, sounds like press reg- change the fuel press regulator. Its a $40 part and easy to change.

Re: 99 chevy 1500 5.3 having trouble starting
If clys were full of fuel a pressure regulator or injector stuck wide open are pretty much the only things that can cause that. bighaas79 is dead right

Only reason why I'm saying cat. Is because I had the same problem with the starter. Starter was having trouble starting the truck with that blocked.cat
