so as of right now my truck has the sm465 and 205 combo. but today i ran across a good deal on a 350 trans and 205 combo and trying to decide if i really want to go back to and automatic or not, but real question is is whats the difference in length if any and whats your opinioins on the pros and cons of each.?

Stay away from 350. Unless you are upgrading to an overdrive automatic it is not a good swap. 700R4 or newer is the only swap worth doing, and I would still keep the SM465.

Re: th350 vs sm465

well i love the sm465 for the reliability and all but and automatic would be nice at times, is what i was thinking. but ive never had good luck with automatics in this truck thats why i went to a 4spd in the first place lol so maybe i should just leave it like it is. plus would save alot of work. but $75 for a 350 and 205 is just hard to pass up lol.

For that price, buy it and re-sell it. Keep your setup, it's much more reliable in the long run.

Re: th350 vs sm465

350s aren't that strong and have no overdrive if you went to an automatic TH400 be way better but I say you still stick with the sm465 cause they rock!

Re: th350 vs sm465

ok what makes a th400 better than a th350?and im not a fan of overdrives at all unless you spend enough money to make up for all the factory flaws lol but ive never really understood what makes a th400 so great? and dont get me wrong i love my 4spd for about everything but sometimes the autos are nice.

SM465
Pros:

Good power transfer
Better fuel economy
Cons:
You have to shift

TH350
Pros:
Don't have to shift
Cons:
Weak
Expensive to rebuild
Loss of power from non lock up torque converter

Re: th350 vs sm465

TH400's are just stronger internally, also. Everything is much heavier duty. For a 2wd with stock tires or something, a stock TH350 will do just fine. For a 4x4 or anything with a built engine or bigger tires, etc. a TH400 is the way to go.

Re: th350 vs sm465

I believe the length is the same, I've seen th350's take alot of abuse. Th350's are easy and cheap to rebuild. Daily driving is alot different from towing, I like an auto for daily driving, but for heavy towing, in my dually I have a 465 and 205. With the 454 running, clutch out, posi's doing what they do, something WILL move. I'd buy it for your next project, it's an investment. Good luck, Ron
