TH400 Dipstick Broke
My build just keeps throwing me curve balls.
I put in a new 400 trans in the truck which was a replacement of the original 400. I bought a new tube and dipstick for it but it did not fit so I had to put the old tube and stick back in. I was checking the fluid and I pulled out the stick and the bottom fell off back in the pan. I measured what was left and from the broken tip to below the handle (rubber) it is 30". All the other sticks are 27". Am I going crazy are what. Can anyone tell me a place to get a replacement stick that should be the correct lenght( I am guessing 32"). Also what is the normal stick depth below the end of the tube? Thanks

Re: TH400 Dipstick Broke
If your going to drop the pan and get the broken end of the old stick out, Could you cut the long stick to the same length as the two pieces of the old one, then file matching marks the same as the old one? Then reuse the old tube?
I did that before. I was sure to measure the fluid when I refilled the empty tranny so if my marks were off some, then I would know. Just a thought, Cayoterun Reread you post: If you new stick isn't longer than the old one, then I'm just blowing smoke.

Re: TH400 Dipstick Broke
The old stick that broke is 30+" the repalcement I have is 27" and the curve off the stick is off and will not fit.
I am not dropping the pan again to retrieve the piece right now.

Did you look at Jegs or Summit? They have a bunch of different dip sticks and tubes.

Re: TH400 Dipstick Broke
Try the junkyard. I have 3 chrome dipsticks and tubes around here, one for a th350 one for a th400 and one for a 700r4 and all of them were wrong. I just use bone stock stuff now. at least that works.

Re: TH400 Dipstick Broke
I have a 27" stick that is new but the tube will not fit in. What can I use to cut the GM stock stube. I was thinking a pipe/tube cutter? I was going to cut the tube down to make this new stick work? Anyone know how far the dip stick should sit in the trans? I have a deep pan so I am not to concern.
