250 block identification help

Pulled the casting numbers on my 250 to see if it's at least from the right era as my truck. I got " CON 2 E228 " above the starter and " 392968 GM 54 " by the disty.

The best info I can find is 3921968 being from a Chevy/Olds 64-76 230-250, but I'm missing the 1 as you can see in the pics.

I assume the E228 is May 22, 1968 (or 1958, or 1978).

Any thoughts?

Re: 250 block identification help

I usually look at the numbers on the flat spot on the block just behind the distributor first and post it.

Re: 250 block identification help

Ah, I was looking for those numbers but didn't realize that's where they were. That area was covered in nastiness.

F0524PF

So the PF is 1968-1969 250CI, correct? I'm not sure what the beginning part means.

Also, is there a partial VIN stamp on the block anywhere?

Thanks for your help!

Re: 250 block identification help

Your block seems to be missing the "1"...3921968

3921968 Chevrolet / Oldsmobile 1964-76 230, 250

Based on this and E228, it has to be a May 22 1968 cast date.

The stamped code next to the distributor will tell you the assembly day and month of your block. The engine assembly code looks similar to this: T0601ED. In this case the first letter "T" stands for Tonawanda, N.Y., either "F" or "V" would indicate Flint, MI., "K" is used for McKinnon Industries and "S" is used for Saginaw. The next two digits stand for the month of the year. In this example "06" or the sixth month, June. The "01" stands for the 1st day of the month. Sometimes (but not always) the letter "I" is substituted for the number "1". If the Month is January through April you'll know it was assembled in 1969. The last two letters will tell you the HP, transmission, and any emissions that were on the vehicle. Hope that helps

Re: 250 block identification help

There won't be a partial VIN until 1972
