I'm in the process of rebuilding the 350 in my 69. It came off a 77 Impala. Thinkng of going to look at this one on Craigs list. The info I've read about this Corvette motor is that it is a 4 bolt main but hp is barely more than my 250 in my GMC.

Worth it or not?

Gonna be low compression. Mid-Seventies engines were not known for making horsepower and were saddled with emission controls that were frequently disabled to no advantage for anyone, as I recall.

Unless someone needs a correct engine for a '75 'Vette, I don't see that it has any value over another L48 from that same year Impala.

If you are close enough, go look at it. What do you have to lose?

250 seems awful low for a vette motor. Was that the factory claim due to smog controls in 1975? It could have a lot of power with flat top pistons and 202 heads. Speaking of which, I'd like to see a close up of the heads to see what they are. Price seems fair but he also says negotiable, so I'd offer 250 and see what happens.

There were 2 engines in '75 vettes; 165 HP @ 3800 RPM 8.5-1 comp. 350 ci.
Optional: 205 HP @ 4800 RPM 9-1 comp. 350 ci. This is according to Peteren's.

I would just build what you have. Like others have said, 70's Vette motors are not at all thrilling, and not worth paying money for. Build your existing 350 and save your money for real heads.

I agree with building what you have if it too is a 4 bolt main. Flat top pistons, forged crank, hot cam and 202 heads. But as I say, if you need a four bolt, the vette motor isn't a bad deal. You still have to sink money in rebuilding though.

I agree with HeavyD. Just rebuild what you have. Look in some of the Car magizines on some ideas for a decent cam and heads to use. I think you'll be money ahead.

Inn this case "Vette motor" means very little. But,I see people wanting that much for "whatever" 350s,so it's not like the seller is asking "Vette" money. I'd varify it is in fact a 4-bolt if that's what interests you. Look up the number and it will likely show Chevys other than just Vettes.

I once had a 175 yr old Buddist Monk tell me....."buyer beware". I can't believe how many motors "ran when pulled". Just what does that mean? The guy pulled the motor and then quickly turn and ran??????

Build what you have. That is a 350 core, nothing more or less. Nothing desirable about the heads or intake.

a 4bolt main engine isnt worth the effort to cross the street to look at if you are already in possession of a good 2bolt for rebuilding

Okay, convinced... I'll just save the money and continue with my plan to rebuild the 350 I already have which is a two bolt. It's served me well.

I wasn't sure of the vet motors but after the comments and what I looked up, it's probably no better than what I already have. Appreciate the info.

I think that in both sbc and bbc the 2 bolt will always be underestimated. I had a bone yard 2 bolt 350 that I used to sling to the moon and it ran a 12.35 best in the 1/4 mile. Drove it everyday to school my senior year. It had some good 2.02 heads which helped it rev.

Alot of people seem to think the Vette small block engine is really special, for the most part the block are no different than a pedesterian SBC. If it is an L48 Engine (I can't check it out at work) then is has a pretty good cam for the 1970's (kind of a upgraded 350 hp 327 cam), other than that is the same as any other 350. I could pull a block out of a 1971 C10 350, deck the head surface and tell everyone that is a Corvette 350 block (the would be crank cast and the vette is forged), but a cast crank does not put out any less HP.

Rebuild what you got. I used 193 heads. 202 are good heads too try a 292 grind cam.

The debate will soon rage. This is a IMO moment.
