Opinions needed on head choice.
dOES ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT SUMMITT ALUM. HEADS aNYBODY RUN NING THEM ? Iwrote summitt & told them what I had ( 400 sbc , flat top pistons ,airgap, full headers, 750 Holley)xe 268 cam now ,stock reworked heads. Will upgrade to a xe 274 cam . they suggested Summitt brand -200 cc intake runners, 64 combustion chamber . Isaid Iwanted the biggest bang for the buck . Previously they recommended trick flow . Since they own trick flow ,Istill wonder if they are the same as summitt . Summitt 1050.00 pair , trickflow about 1250.00, AFR ABOUT 1450.00 .

When you order the summit brand I would bet you get Trick flow in the box probably.

Re: Opinions needed on head choice.
With flat tops what kind of compression will you be running with 64cc heads?

Re: Opinions needed on head choice.
Your stock reworked heads, are they 400 heads or? I think you might be going from a 76 cc chamber to a 64 cc chamber. While Summit owns Trick Flow, the Summit heads do not use the Twisted Wedge design of the Trick Flows.

Re: Opinions needed on head choice.
Me personally wouldn't run anything that has Summit's name on it. Valve covers, air cleaner stuff like that is fine, but nothing motor wise.
Do you have stock rods or 5.7"?? I built a 406 with 350 rods and with 64cc heads and I believe 22cc dish pistons I was at 9.8-1 compression. I think your gonna be well over 10-1. I had the same cam, used stock TBI heads/intake, motor had gobs of torque.... I wanted to build another 406, building the short block the same, but using mild Vortec heads, with that cam, 750 carb, headers, blah blah, been told many that it would have been 425-ish horse. Was gonna go in a 2wd S-10 Blazer....

Re: Opinions needed on head choice.
You can't go wrong with the afr's if you've got the extra bucks for them. That 400 is going to want a lot of air flow.
I helped a friend as he built a 400 for his camaro and he went through a lot of studying before he settled on afr's. I thought he could have saved some money using a different head but the dyno told the truth. His put out 503 HP and 538 tq. Super Chevy built a very similar engine using the dart top end package and it was down 40 or so HP compared to his.... Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Opinions needed on head choice.
Thinking Iwill go with the summitt (Brodix ) heads . Feel they will flow all the cfm's I need . If Ihad a more serious engine (ie big roller cam with a lot more lift than what I will have ) AFR'S would be the ticket , I guess. Ithink it is a fact that how much air you can push thru your engine is determinded by how much valve lift you have.
Please anybody chime in on this ,Im hardly an expert on this subject . |

Re: Opinions needed on head choice.
call patriot heads they know their crap.
https://www.patriot-performance.com/ all i can say is keep with straight plug heads, the angle plugs offer no advantage anymore and the headers cost alot more.

Re: Opinions needed on head choice.
I got dart iron eagle 200 angle plugs on my 406.
Coming from worked camel humps@ 61 cc to 65cc darts runs way better less detonation happy and at 300$ a side bare. BTW even if you buy assembled heads have someone check them out. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Opinions needed on head choice.
Flat top pistons with 64cc chambers is about 12:1 !!!! 72cc's gets it down closer to 11:1, still mixing gas or adding octane boost. SRP makes a reverse dome piston that'll get you to around 9.8:1 - they're the ones I'll be using on my 404 build, probably the same ones b454rat used. Other than that, all I could find was Keith Black.
I have some 225cc runner Bowtie Vortecs for mine, just picked up a raised runner intake, should be a great engine with a 238/246 hydraulic roller... |
