Anything "interesting" to do with the spare tire recess in the rear fender?

Anyone do anything "interesting" with the spare tire recess on your trucks fender besides putting a spare there? Just seems like it is begging for some trick doohickey or something creative other than leaving it an otherwise useless feature. If i didnt want to leave my original patina intact i would simply find a fender without the recess but cant so i would like to come up with something interesting. Thanks

If I were inclined to leave that fender on a truck I'd also leave the spare on the bracket and be done with it. My stepfather had a 54 with the spare there and I can say from experience that it is a lot nicer to be able to pull the spare off the side than lay on your back in the mud and pull it out from under the truck. And if you are going to leave the crappy worn out paint on it the spare should be part of the whole effect.

I agree. You could always build a seat and sit a hot chick there.

I've seen one (can't find a pic though) where a sheetmetal cover was made to fill it in to make it look like a non spare tire fender, hinged with a latch for tool /cleaners storage. looked kinda neat. not sure if the guy squared off the inside or left it rounded but the idea caught my eye.

I had one on my 58 Apache I bought a Metal tire cover off of a Van and had a shop logo painted on it.

Thanks for the replies that were constructive anyhow. I am thinking about getting an old beat up faded looking smallish fire extinguisher and mounting it in that recess....... or a beer tap

Ice bin for drinks. Use curved lexan and make it a fish tank. Add a heating coil for deep frying fish and chips or finger steaks. Add a blender and make mega batchs of margiritia.

After reading all of the responses I've come to the conclusion that....
I'm real glad I have a fleet side that is now a flatbed. However the giant margarrita maker is worth a shot.

I have two extra rear fender (one with cut out) going to make a trailer for my Harley Davidson and use the fender cut out for spare tire for the truck when hauling the bike.

I'm not one of those "it's gotta be original" annal types. It's only original once, when the first owner drove it home from the dealer. However I like the spare tire look on the side of the bed. With a 3600 I don't have to worry about the recessed fender.

I've seen it a few times. Both back in the 50's/60's when the trucks were used for work daily and later on one that was more of a lowrider. Just don't ding it in with a sledge hammer and leave the dents unfinished like a friend of my stepfather at the time did in the late 50's. He had a regular spare on one side and a traction tire spare for the rear on the other. That truck spent a lot of time up in the woods on hunting trips and showed it.
