Putting Disc Brakes on a 69

Hello,
I am looking for a how to on changing my 69 to front disc brakes. Any advice is appreciated. I plan on purchasing this kit http://stores.intuitwebsites.com/hst...END/Detail.bok and putting it on. I will also put new calipers, bearings, and maybe new rotors. What do I need to take off a 71/72 to complete the task?
Thanks!

I believe you'll need the front steering linkage from the 71/72, as well as the spindles...I'm sure I'm missing something....

Also, let us know how you like that kit....

Re: Putting Disc Brakes on a 69

You will need the drag link (long connector between steering box and idler arm)and spindles from the 71-72, everything else will work in the kit. It is pretty straight forward, but you will need to get a disc drum prop valve and front brake hoses that will adapt to your setup. I personally have used the kit from GMC pauls several times with very good success. In fact I will doing this again over thanksgiving break to the 1970 CST.

Before you make your final decision on where to buy from please take a look in the forums "Vendor Marketplace. We have some really great vendors that support our forum and would love to have your business.

In the meantime I would spend some time reading this "Drum to Disc" conversions 60-70

Re: Putting Disc Brakes on a 69

I would be happy to purchase parts from a forum sponsor with competitive pricing. I only posted that link cause it appeared to be reasonably priced complete kit. I have this 1972 Donor truck that has the proportioning valve and probably everything I need. My only concern is that while the truck is apart it seems that it would be wise to replace everything that could possibly be worn. Has anyone had any success unbolting the entire complete front suspension? I have another 71 that I spent a few minutes on with a socket and breaker bar with no success. Someone told me you could just remove a few bolts and take the entire front suspension off. I don't know if that is a huge advantage because I will want to replace A frame bushings, ball joints and everything anyhow. I would love any input and would be happy to read any posts already written on how to do it. I would like to have a pretty good idea what I am going to do before I tackle it.
Thanks!

Re: Putting Disc Brakes on a 69

That is the donor at least for the proportioning valve and master cylinder probably the rotors/spindles too. Motor gone. Cab for sale. Doors rusted and missing vent windows. Long story and too much missing.

Have this one also but don't have the proportioning valve or master cylinder and the rotors look pretty beat. Motor and bed and rear end gone off this one now.

Off the top of my head...remove the 2 bolts that come thru the upper x-member, the top shock bolt, the pitman arm and the idler arm...

Re: Putting Disc Brakes on a 69

Yes, you can swap the entire crossmember and all the components at one time. Since you are planning a rebuild, it won't be much of an advantage because you will be breaking it all down anyway.

Re: Putting Disc Brakes on a 69

I'm of the opinion that since you are gonna tear into it you on might as well just do it all while you are already greasy and swearing at bolts!

New ball joints, bearings, bushings and such, plus cleaning it all up might take a bit longer but not having to sweat that stuff for 40 more years is worth it I think!

Re: Putting Disc Brakes on a 69

You said the cab is for sale on the white donor truck? I would like to see some pictures of the obvious spots that are usually rusted out and general condition please. Thanks
