Whats a good seam sealer...
Hey guys. I'm working on the cab of my 71 and was wondering if anyone can recommend a good seam sealer for the top and drip rails. I've read about the self leveling types. How exactly do these work? Are these sandable? Should i prime/paint(seal) before applying? The reason i ask is because i probly wont be painting the cab until spring...thanks in advance!

I use a 3M product called "Fast 'N' Firm". You should be able to get it at any automotive paint supply house. 3M™ Fast N Firm™ Seam Sealer, Part# 08505. LockDoc

Re: Whats a good seam sealer...
It's pretty straight forward. I cut the tip off small and do the narrower seams first and trim it off as I move up to the wider seams. As far as the drip rail it's easier with 2 people. One applying and one smoothing. Once you get an area filled, smooth it with your finger dampened on a wet sponge. That keeps the sealer from sticking to your finger. If you need to feather it out don't get any water where you need to thin it out on the roof metal.

Re: Whats a good seam sealer...
3M fast and firm down the back sides and 3m self leveling on the flat parts, or do the top then roll the cab and do the back sides. The self leveling is awesome.

Re: Whats a good seam sealer...
I use lacquer thinner on a rag to smooth it out.

Re: Whats a good seam sealer...
Like he was asking do you do this AFTER priming/sealing or do you do on bare metal?

Re: Whats a good seam sealer...
I like to do it after atleast a zinc rich or etch primer. If you do it over lawyer or urethane primer make sure it sanded good. And with self leveling seam sealer you don't have to smooth it out, it dies it itself.
