is this possible?
Is it possible for a 67 or 68 chevy 4x4 1/2ton to not have a K in the vin#?

The K "defines it" as a 4wd. The VIN is like a finger print or better yet,DNA

These trucks are over 40 years old and there have been a lot of mechanics that have swapped engines, rear ends and made other changes when needed -like grabbing a cab or bed from one truck and swapping it to another. As a matter of fact, I'm in the market for a cab for my 69 right now and I don't know what I will wind up with.
 I see a lot of trucks on craig's list where the seller says it's a certain year but the front end definitely shows a different year. |

what if it were converted? like a napco? i have read but do not remember all the other things napco did besides a transfercase and front axle?? i may be out of line just a thought. but the old cab switcharoo would also explain

The few I remember seeing were coded as expected. The factory model codes were CS or CE for conventional cabs and KS or KE for 4X4 trucks. Later trucks sometimes used an additional C like CCE or CKE (think Chevrolet Conventional Eight).
On a "period" conversion the build model and VIN would reflect the "as built" configuration. There should also be an upfitter certification plate/sticker on later trucks.

I think the GM vehicles with NAPCO conversions ended with the '59's. GM offered the '60's with 4WD.
If you want to check and compare VIN's, look at the one on the driver's side frame rail, in front of the firewall and compare it with the one on the cab. If the digits on the VIN don't match in both places (frame rail and cab), then you have your answer. It's prpbably a replacement cab on a 4WD chassis. Chassis are different animals for the two applications, i.e., they don't interchange...bare 2WD frame for bare 4WD frame...different part numbers.

I think the parent company of NAPCO survived and did conversions into the late 60's, mostly on medium duty trucks, but perhaps on light trucks as well.
