Power steering box
I just got my power steering box from Advance auto parts online. I ordered one for a 75 pickup. The one I received from them has a longer pitman arm shaft (it still fits) and the rag joint shaft is a lot bigger. The fittings for the hoses also do not look like they are for flared type. The part number on their web site is SG17501. I had bought the new rag joint a few days ago from one of their local stores P/N 200 and it is too small to fit on the shaft. It is a 3.5 turn box. I am running a serpentine belt setup so the fittings probably wouldn't be a problem. Should I use this box and get a different rag joint or try and get the right box? Thanks.
Nothing ever seems to go right for me on this build! |

Re: Power steering box
Hello to a fellow western New Yorker. If it were me, I would run the correct box and pitman and then just have the hoses made to adapt to the newer pump. I'm not sure what year they changed to metric. A few years ago, I bought a new rag joint from advance and it didn't fit the box even though it was listed for it. If I remember correctly, I had to return it and get the other one they offer PN 201?

Re: Power steering box
I think I'm going to use the one they sent. I'll go this morning and see if I can find a rag joint to fit it. It looks like it might be 13/16th

rsavage It looks like you were right. I just checked advance web site and 201 is 13/16. I'll take the p/n 200 back and get 201. Thanks for the help

Re: Power steering box
I would also ask them who rebuilds their gears and if the rebuilder has a policy of replace only parts that are broken verses all of the ware parts. WES

Re: Power steering box
Just got the pn 201 and every thing is now good. Once I get some parts back on the frame so the a arms are off of the spindle I'll see if it turns alright. Next thing is to find the right lines for it.

Re: Power steering box
WES, that would be a good question to ask them but I don't think the kid at the counter would have any idea who does their rebuilding. Most of the time they can't even give me the right part. I know on the box it said rebuilt in Mexico.

Re: Power steering box
It comes with a life time warranty so if it breaks it goes back.
