Just a note: upgrading a motherboard regardless of who the OEM manufacturer is IS difficult period - especially when changing architectures. It's never easy unless you have a 1:1 swap for the same board! Otherwise you might as well get a new cabinet and start from scratch. You're starting over anyway with a new botherboard...

I have a Dell Dimension L600cx computer. It is about 3 years old. We have only had 1 problem with it, the hard drive went out about an year ago. I talked on the phone with a Dell tech (VERY helpful and knowledgeable) and the next day they sent up a guy from Arkansas and he put in a new hard drive free of change. Their customer service has been very good IMO.

I recently tore into the computer with the help of my roomate (hes a computer guru...i just know how to use one) and he showed me how to put an ehternet networking card in it. Pretty easy task. Anyway, the inside of the computer is pretty cramped. Not alot of room if you want to work on it, but i just like using it so it has been a pretty good computer IMO.

the large open space is what I like about my PC's here. It makes removing and replacing cards a breeze. Even motherboard swaps a bit easier when you don't have to disassemble half the box. Putting in cards is always the easy part. Its getting the OS to recognize them that is the pain. In many ways it has gotten easier, but when windows can't find it by PNP(plug n pray) it can become very difficult.

I have a 4 month old Dell Laptop.. So far so good. Crapped once, called Dell and had to wait for someone that could speak ENGLISH AND UNDERSTAND ENGLISH. Once that happened, He wanted me to start to take the thing apart. Now that would require me to walk out to the shop and get the really ting screwdriver at 2 am in the morning. I refused as I paid way too much and bought the 3 year in home warranty. To me that means, when the computer farts, they come, like they said in the fine print, the next day, to my home and fix, repair, or replace for the next 3 years. I see that Dell wants to run you through the paces before they spend the $ to send someone out. I finally got them to agree to send a tech. That was a joke. He did in fact get it working but I feel for the $2,000 that I paid, I got royally screwed. As for the H.P's that I own, the old one that is about 5 years being that it is running Win 98, has been flawless. The newer one in my office had been back to Costco 4 times to get replaced. I finally got a good one. I guess its like everything you buy these days. There are good and bad with every manufacture co. If I was to buy a Gateway, I very well could get the same crap as I got with Dell. At least, for now, its working and Im typing this to you..

Yeah Man!
Mac G5, now you're talkin'!

I'm sure I'll get some flames for this, BUT...

All the folks I know who are actually into the architecture of computer systems tell me that the mac is a more elegent and efficient OS than any version of Windows. Better does not mean more popular. Take the BetaMax VCR for example. It was far superior in quality to the VHS format. Unfortunately Sony kept Beta propritary and did not sell as many as the inferior Panasonic VHS format that was given out to many manufacturers by Panasonic. Same with Apple. Anything you plug into a Mac works because of the constraints of the system. Thats good. Makes life simple so you can use the computer instead of working on the computer to get it to work. But Apple kept the OS propritary while Microsoft gave their system out. Bad marketing for Apple. Again, the product with the larger user base won out. Harder for the average PC user to operate and add peripherals to than the Mac, but more software so more sales.
All the above is just my humble opinion.....

OK, nomex suit is on.................

Soooo, call them back and try again, orrr, try someone else? That is the question.
I need to be able to post pics. (XP won't recognize my camera.)
Also scan. (XP won't recognize my Scanner)
It does see my HP printer.
Don't need DVD.
Would use CD-R/RW and 3.5 floppy.
Recommendations for $1000.00 or less ?

If you use devices that have been tested and are on the Windows HCL(hardware compatibility list) you will have no problems with your devices working with Windows. The problem is most people want to save a buck so they buy the cheapest devices they can get and cheaper usually means they didn't spend the money on as much compability testing. I buy quality parts and use quality software. My windows machine has been running fine since I built it 2 years ago even with processor upgrades, memory upgrades and several peripheral devices, with out having to reinstall once. If Microsoft said you can ONLY run those approved devices and only approved software then PCs running Windows would be just like a Mac.

That is not true for all models. The board that I have is not an atx style board. I'll get some pics and post in a few.

I wasn't trying to say it was the same for all, just a few I have seen have been that way, but there have been twice as many that weren't.
