pulled engine today, original?
pulled the engine today from my 58 Apache, it ran ok but needs to be freshened up. Block code was 3737739 and the heads were X58? Is this the original 283 in my V8 truck?

Re: pulled engine today, original?
casting number is correct for a 58 truck.
on the front passenger side of the engine where the heads sit theres numbers there. they will say what the original application was the engine. thats if the engine wasn't rebuilt and decked |

Don't toss it in the junk. Some of these early chevy truck parts were also used on early vettes and get high dollars on ebay. Exhaust manifolds can get $100 each.

Re: pulled engine today, original?
Also a lot of guys are hunting 283 engines for traditional hot rods. That is if you don't intend to rebuild it and go again. The consecutive sequence number should be on the block on that pad.
I'm pretty sure that the number on the pad on the block should match the serial "vin" number on the truck. 1958 Sample Vehicle Identification Number is: 3A58A000001 3A* Series: (D-1171, H-1271, 3A-3100, 3B-3200, 3E-3600, 3G-3800) 58 Last two digits of model year (55>,56,57,58,59) A Assembly plant (A-Atlanta GA, B-Baltimore MD, F-Flint MI, J-Janesville WI, K-Kansas City MO, L-Los Angeles CA, N-Norwood OH, O-Oakland CA, S-St. Louis MO, T-Tarrytown NY, W-Willow Run, MI) 000001 Consecutive Sequence Number * ("V" prefix indicates a V-8 engine) Decoding: 3100 Series 1958 Model year Built in Atlanta, Georgia The first car built |

Re: pulled engine today, original?
I'm sure I'm keeping it in the truck. Just want to rebuild it now and return it to stock like?
I will need a stock air cleaner because this truck had a aftermarket unit. Also it has a alternator and newer distibutor and I think that will stay. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: pulled engine today, original?
The block no# has the right date range. And the heads should be a 7 digit no# probably starting with 37*****, also what shape is the stamp on the front of the heads?
