1963 GMC 305 Harmonic Balancer
I am attempting to source a new harmonic balancer for my 305 V6. I've read through past forums and have run into dead links for $30 replacements to Summit Racing, yet when you put in: 1963 GMC 1500 5.0....etc, it comes up with nothing. I just recently purchased this vehicle and after giving it a going-over discovered some wobble in the balancer. Does anyone have a good listing for a replacement, the only ones I've found are at LMC truck and they run from $180 and $400....not hapening. Thanks in advance

Google Dale Mfg. Guy rebuilds them. He did mine, quick turnaround, good work.

Re: 1963 GMC 305 Harmonic Balancer
Hey Todd,
your 305 does not have a harmonic balancer. It's more of a flange that the pulley bolts to as well as having some markings for timing. This engine is internally balanced. Perhaps you just have some or one bolt(s) loose down there... If the flange is damaged you may have to go junkyard or the parts for sale on this site... Hope this helps, Henry

Re: 1963 GMC 305 Harmonic Balancer
Mine's like in the pictures. It doesn't have any elastomer, is one piece, NOT two piece. When I got my engine, it had the front hub broken, in that the former person that had it, jammed the damper onto the crank with the key not in the groove in the rear, literally peeling up the seal area by the key in the crank being stuck up out of the groove. This took all the rubber out of the front seal, causing a massive il leak.
I fixed the hub by spinning it on my lathe, cutting the seal area down and further to the front of the hub, then, cutting a short section of thick muffler tubing to interference fit the undersize cut hub. After sealing and pressing the tubing onto the hub, I trhen cut the tubeing to the same size as the hub had for the seal. I then installed the key into the crank all the way, and reinstalled the hub. It works fine. Since this isn't a two piece damper, only a one piece hub, it can be repaired. Welding/machining is one possibility, as is any other operation to repair it. Just where is it "wobbling"? |

Todd,
My 305 didn't have a dampener on it. Maybe you could take a picture of the broken part?

Thank you one and all for your insight. I'll take some pictures when I get home tonight and post them in an effort to solve this riddle.

Re: 1963 GMC 305 Harmonic Balancer
I took a couple of pics before it got dark and as you so aptly described, it does not have a harmonic balancer. I see that I need a new belt and I may have a bolt or two missing (too cold and dark right now to mess with it). During a revolution, as I watch the timing indication needle, the pulley appears to be about a 1/4 inch out of round.

Re: 1963 GMC 305 Harmonic Balancer
Todd, the pulley appears to be bent...maybe somewhere in it's past it ran over something and just wacked it good enough to cause a permanent wobble. When you do get it off you may to re-wack to bring it into compliance.
