1965 C-10 LS build

This is my build that I started last year. It is a 1965 C-10 short bed fleet side. I bought the truck that was taken apart and the restoration started by the previous owner. I finshed up some his work but had to redo other work that he attempted. I replaced both inner and outter fenders. Replace the right door and re-skined the left door. The truck came with 350 ci and a turbo 350 trans. I decided to go with a 5.3L out of a 2005 silverado and a 4L60E transmission. The rear end was rebuilt with 5 lug axles and a Aburn posi unit with 3:73 gears. I have a lot more work to do but hope to be driving it by summer. I was able to post a couple of pictures of my truck. Yesterday I finished up with the welding on the rocker panel. All the parts came in for the cylinder heads now I can finish them up tomorrow and if everything goes ok I will put in the engine and trans. After that I can finished up the electrical wiring for the engine and transmission. I will be able to figure out what exhaust headers I am going to use. I have read some different posts here and it looks like a majority of them like the Doug Thorley headers. I have seen that a few people used headers from a 2000-2002 camaro. A local speedshop said that a few people have used the headers from a 1969 camaro conversion. Was wondering if anyone else has tried it to use the headers from a 1969 camaro with any luck? CaptainFab, Thanks for the info on the headers. I will go down to the local speed shop to see what they have in stock. The DynaTech's look pretty good on that truck.

Today I was able to get the heads together and installed on the engine. I rebuilt the rocker arms with the Comp Cams trunion kit. (That was easier than I thought it would be.) Put the rocker arms on and adjusted the valves. I installed the harmonic balancer and the flex plate. Hopefully I will get the motor and trans installed tomorrow.

I got the engine and trans installed today. It was not easy. I had issues with the motor mounts. I have the CCP frame mounts, they worked great with the sbc, but it took some work to get them to get them to work with the LS engine. I read a few post about issues with these mounts and getting headers to clear. Has anyone ever had issues with motor mounts and these frame mounts? I used poly mounts from CCP. I'm not sure if this is going to be and issue but I had to remove the steel backing plate that is used with the poly mounts. After loosing up the frame mounts everything went together. After the wiring and saving up some money exhaust will be next.









The next picture is the next project. The harness is done just need to run the wires and clean up the harness. First I need to figure out where to put the computer.

Wow, that LS motor looks right at home sitting in your truck. Nice job. please post lots of pics doing the wiring like where you have to splice into the factory truck harness or adding a wire here and there. I have been thinking about doing one of these swaps in my truck someday but Im not good at the wiring game.

Was your original motor mount in the front holes on the frame rail? I felt like mine was too close to the radiator in that location. Also my perches are under the 3 & 4 ports looks like yours are 1 & 2 ports. BBK headers for comaro may fit yours the way it is

Thanks for the comment. Will post the pictures during the wiring. I have done low voltage wiring on different vehicles but never rewired a whole vehicle expecially wiring up a EFI computer controled vehicle.

Things to consider when wiring the motor up. Do you want to drill a big 1.5" hole through the firewall? Or do you want to use a plug that seperates it? I'm looking at putting min behind the cab and running the harness over the top of the tran's this way i can just shoot straight down each bank and keep it clean. These motor's look clean if you can either move or dress up the coil pack's.

Just an FYI the Carshop sells 1" set back plates for $45.00 if you need to move the motor back some. To me the front area will be tight.

I have been working on the engine wiring over the past few days. I have about 90% of the wiring done. I have the computer mounted, the TAC unit mounted and both the fuse box for the engine harness and the new fuse box and wiring for the truck mounted. I still have to run the trucks wiring harness though. I still need to clean up the wires and put the wires in loom but its getting close. I mounted the drive by wire gas pedal but need to cut the pedal and move it up a little bit to make it a little more comfortable. Nothing a little cutting and welding will take care of.

The new rear mounted gas tank came yesterday from Brothers Truck parts. I think I will give my brain a rest from wiring and on Monday get the tank, fuel pump and lines finished up.



















On a different note if any one around the southern Chicago suburbs CPC power coating in Crest Hill has a deal on powercoating frames. The latest Lead Foot News paper has an add in it that shows $300.00 for any car frame blasted and power-coated. This is the place that did mine, never had a problem with their work.

No haven't purchased them yet. It seems like to only one's that fit good without any modifications to them are the Doug Thorleys. The only problem is that they cost twice as much as some other brand that may need a little work. Any recomendations?

I tried 3 different sets with no luck. Your perch location is forward of mine so you may have better luck. I am going with DT from Shon, $550 well worth it if I can get past this hump. If not in the trash goes the CPP perch's and on to plan "E".

I'm will most likely end up with the DT headers. I noticed that the DT headers on Summits web site shows them compatable with the CPP perches. Do you know if that "SHON" has them in stock yet? Summit Racing has them in stock but want $618.00. I was told that headers from a 69 camaro Ls swap will work. A local speed shop has a pair of Hooker Headers that I'm going to try. I looked at your build again and that truck looks great. It's nice when everything is new and clean. I couldn't tell which engine adapter mounts you have. Do you have theone that you can adjust the engine back?

My engine adapter are not adjustable, that may be the next step if the DT coming don't work out.
