Trans removal or shifter removal

The shifter on my trans comes from the top of the trans. I either need to figure out a way to pull the actual shifter out or know the easiest way to pull the trans. Cleaning up the top a bit it looks like I may have to remove a full plate which looks like it may expose the top of the trans.

So what is the trick to remove the shifter? Do I need to remove the full top plate?
