350 Heads

My '76 350 smokes a bit and the P/O said the valve seats were bad. So I bought a set of regrinds from a Camaro 350. But they have the double valve springs. (one inside the other) Is this a bad thing? What can I expect with this setup? Is there anything I have to do to accomadate the extra tension on my valves?

Re: 350 Heads

Did you check the compression on each cylinder? Worn rings could cause smoking too.
Do you know the chamber size of the head? What size are the valves? Check the springs are not for a solid lifter cam.

Re: 350 Heads

Cylinder compression good. About 4psi variance between all 8. As far as I can tell from the exterior of the heads on the engine now it's the same heads just shaved .008 more than the original. I suppose I will find out when we pull them for replacement.

Re: 350 Heads

I would suspect the valve guides/seals before I worried about it being a ring issue. The double springs may put too much pressure on your cam lobes, not sure which ones they are or their rating.

Re: 350 Heads

My 87 smoked pretty bad when I got it, so I replaced the valve seals. As far as I can tell it doesn't smoke any more.
