Re: Newbie w/ A New Ride

Welcome to the forum. That appears to be a beautiful truck. Looking forward to more photos when it arrives. It seems to have a driver side spotlight, and if those bed rails are originals (which they appear to be) they are worth a small fortune. In mint condition they can bring $500-$1,000). What are your plans for the truck?

Re: Newbie w/ A New Ride

Not sure, I know the first thing i am going to do i build a lean too on side of my garage, right it is full with my Oldsmobiles. The truck is going in the garage while the SX is going under lean too. The truck is from Martinsville- Collinsville VA area and the spot lights were very popular in that area. I plan on taking it to shows and cruise-ins. Here in Richmond VA there at least 3 cars shows a month. Usually i drive the 442 and my wife drives the SX but the SX is just a driver and has never been restored. The SX usually wins a 3rd place or a top 50 trophy above 50% of the time. Now when i take the truck it maybe will be 2 1st place trophys. The truck belong to my late Uncle that passed away 3 years ago and my Aunt is selling it so i bought it to keep in family. The family is very sketchy on details. About the truck.

Yeah...saw those bed rails in the 1963 custom parts catalog, have never seen a set for sale, was wondering what they were worth.

IMHO you should stay with your own instincts. In my youth bed rails were very popular and common on mild custom 55-59 Chevy pickups, along with 59-60 El Caminos. I believe a lot of Ranchero guys had them as well. If it had lake pipes, spotlights, whitewalls and custom wheel covers it frequently had bed rails as well. Like many other fads, many of these accessories were passé by the 1960’s. I don’t recall ever seeing bed rails on a 60-66 truck when they were new, but I never stopped admiring them. They remained in the J.C. Whitney catalog until the early 1970’s.

The original stanchions were truly works of art, but sadly the plating wasn’t very durable. If these rails were actually pressed into service they normally rusted, pitted, and peeled, which explains why so few sets are available today. It’s a rare treasure to see a set in excellent condition actually mounted on a beautiful truck today.

Member Aerotruk63 has the only other set I’m aware of. His can be seen on the following thread, and are installed per factory specifications. They are also the only set I’ve ever seen on any vehicle pointing to the rear.

Good advice.

Don't let your friends influence you away from something you like.

Welcome to the forum

That is a very nice looking truck.

I assume your uncle was the one who restored it? I think that's great that you are keeping it in the family.
