Anyone used 40' shipping containers as car storage??

In an effort to keep my truck, I've been looking into reasonable storage options. There is a facility that has tons of 40' shipping containers like you would see on a shipping boat. They are 8x8x40'. I could easily get 2 cars in there. Are they water tight? Does 8' wide even allow you to get out of the truck (I have small mirrors)? Leaking down the sides isn't a big deal as long as the roof itself doesn't leak. I live in a very dry climate so rust isn't really an issue but I don't want something that can sweat or hold in unnecessary moisture either.

Yes. Only thing you need to do on a storage container for storing cars is to install a vent on each end. After the container being closed up for a couple weeks, as soon as you open the door of the container it smells like gas. The interior of the car smells like gas for a little while after being out. Just make sure you ad a vent of sorts because they really seal up good.

Prostreet how much rent on a storage container?

$125 a month. The 10x20 is $115 and it will only hold one car. This is why I'm looking at the container.

They sell for 1500/3000 or so up here depending on the condition and how old they are.

I've thought about getting one to use as a shop or to keep the 48 in. A guy could throw a coat of paint on one to match the house and other out buildings and maybe plant a few arborvitae down the street side if that was an issue to improve appearances.

I don't know what effect it would have on a car, But they hold heat really bad. It doesn't get as hot where you are as it does here, but if it's 90 outside it's probably a 140 in the container.

i just put my in storage indoors with battery tender hook up with security cams system for until winter is over ,I'm paying 105 a mo. they got storage containers too ,i ask the lady about storing my truck she said not good for cars i guess condensation builds up inside

That was what I was worried about. As you know, Bend is high desert with low, low humidity.`

Mr48: The problem is space. When we move back into town, there will not be room at my house or in my marriage for a 40' container. My wife would divorce me for sure. lol

I bought a 20 footer in order for me to obtain insurance from Hagerty.It was the best option rather than closing in a pole barn type structure.

My boss told me "Hey we have a spare 20' container you could use for
storing whatever you want" ...So for a year I kept her at work.
Now its parked in the garage but it worked great for me ..
especially because on a Blazer you could pull in and just walk out the back

Put vents in it and run a dehumidifier. You will also need to check county, city or local rules on those things....They are a code violation here to use them.

I'm storing my 72 442 in a container. Personally I find it to be a complete pain in the butt getting it in and out. It gets stinky in there but it does keep it dry. I think the 442 is narrower than the trucks and with about a 1/4 inch between the passenger mirror and the wall I can barely sqeeze out of the drivers door as long as I park it where the door opens such that it swings into the wide part of the corregated side.

Yes. I've heard that they get pretty bad condensation, enough that there's water dripping from the ceiling after a temp change..

You only get condensation when you have humidity. It's bone dry where I live.

I am seriously concerned about the getting in and out though. I had no idea they where that narrow. Guess I never really thought about it when I see them on the back of a tractor/trailer! That might not really be an option. I'm not going to climb through a window. Then again......I guess it's not like I'm getting into it everyday! Here it is dead of winter and the outside humidity is only 26%. That's really low!

Just my opinion but I would think when that cool dry outside air hits that warm air inside the container... your gonna get condensation

I actually don't know just how condensation works so I can't say it wouldn't happen. I'm just not diggen the room on each side!

You know the more I thought about it, this is outside. If it's 20* outside, then it will be 20* inside. It's not going to be warm inside with no heat or insulation.

Actually it won't because space is the problem. I'm going from 9 acres to a lot.
