Will a s10 rear end fit my 70 C10 shortbed?
I want to change the six lug rear end to a five lug rear end and I was told that one from an S10 would work, is that true? If not, any suggestions on what would work.
Thank you. |

I don't know whether or not it will fit, but I can go out in the shop tomorrow and measure from backing plate to backing plate for you.
The bolt pattern is different from the c-10 though. The s-10 is a 5 on 4-3/4 where as the c-10 5 on 5.

48 inches to backing plates if I remember. Now there are some 4x4 S10 that the rear is 4 inches wider than the 2wd and the ZR2 is even wider than the regular 4wd but they are kinda hard to find and are crazy expensive when you do. the bolt pattern is not 5on 5 it is 5 on 4 3/4 like a small to mid size car. The astrovan may be worth looking into, it is wideer and had 5on 5 bolt patterns

With all the full size 1/2t trucks in the world, why not use one of those? S10s are narrower AND you need to do something about modifying the mounts. A '73 or newer you just have to modify the mounts..if you have a coil spring truck.

Re: Will a s10 rear end fit my 70 C10 shortbed?
A '70 rear end is the same width as the '71-74 truck. Simply swap axles and brake drums from the later units. It's us who have a '60-69 that have more trouble finding a proper-width axle and have to swap rear ends or get aftermarket 5-lug axles. You're lucky.

I will try and get the axles from the wrecking yard today. Any hints on how to to the axles out? I have never done that.

Re: Will a s10 rear end fit my 70 C10 shortbed?
The axles are pretty easy to remove, first take the drums off, then take the rear diff cover off, remove the 5/16" bolt holding the pin-( use a 1/4" drive ratchet, as they sometimes snap using anything larger, your screwed if the bolt holding the pin snaps. If it snaps you'll need an easy out to remove the pin) return to one of the axles and push it in a little and the c-clip will sometimes fall out. If not then try to grab them manually

Do I need to change the gears on the diff or will the axles just slip into my 70 diff?
