Any example of "SPID and a HALF" - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Sorry, I don't know what else to call it, but in the assembly manual it details how to create the SPID, and it says in effect that if there are too many options to fit on one SPID sticker, continue the list on a second SPID sticker, but only on half of it (and throw the other half away, I guess).

No mention of what to do if there are more options than will fit on 3 colums.

Anyhooo... wondering if anyone has an example? I've certainly never seen one myself.

I have never seen a truck with more options than one SPID would fit.

I think they just went with a slightly smaller font size. A friend of mine has a truck with a HUGE amount of options that cover the entire SPID. It seemed to me the font was smaller than mine.

Would the printers back in those days be able to adjust the fonts? Back in those days the computer wasn't an option ...

I have seen 2 spids on the square bodies, but never on 67-72. I have never seen a single, full spid for 67-72 either.

I have seen multiple SPID labels on medium duty trucks (C-6500's), but not pickups.

I have never seen any on 67-72's, but on the later trucks I have seen a couple. Here is an old 79 gmc 1 ton I have. It has two labels. On the top of the second label it has printed "two page label". These are not very good pics.

I believe they used the IBM Selectric electric typewriter. That model had removable "fonts" in the form of a type-ball that snapped into the front of the unit. Several different type-balls were available.
Most typewriters in that period had a fixed typeface. Either "Pica" or "Elite" -- one was slightly smaller than the other. I forgot which.

Never seen one with more than a one sheet either. You will never find a typewriter that matches the font used because they were NOT done one at a time with a typewriter. They were done on a large mainframe printers that had their own unique character set.

I assumed it would have been a big tractor-feed chain impact printer or the like. Given enough samples you could build a font that looked close, but it still wouldn't look exactly like an impact printer.

For that matter there's no guarantee that each of the plants used the same model printer, but given GM likely just contracted with IBM or Burroughs or someone for their IT, they probably did.

Dave, I've wondered the same thing. All the different plants and over the years, there's probably some variations to the font used.

You can look at all the spids you want in this post and decide for yourself SPID pictures but I think you will find that all years all factories did them the same way with the exception of the canada plant who laid them out a little different but did use the same "font".

Sorry I have no clue what IBM font they used. I'm a Royal manual user. I didn't like electrics, they were too sensitive for my rough style.
