Axle Question

I am looking at buying a set of axles out of a 75 3/4 ton 4x4. The front is a dana 44 and the rear is a 14 bolt with a gov lock. Ratio is 4:11s. Comes from hub to hub and drum to drum.

1) What is the average going price for these?

2) I am unfamiliar with the "gov-lock". How tough/dependable are they? How well do they work?

Thanks,
Tim

A good corp-14 is worth about 500 and a dana 44 is about maybe 650. The pair is worth $1000 if it is in good shape. If everything needs to be re-built, then a corp-14 core is $100 and the 44 is like 250.

Make sure you get the brake hoses, u-bolts and u-bolt plates.

I don't know about a gov-loc, but I have have heard good things.

Hope this helps

I had a gov loc in a 12 bolt and it worked great. Think the first ones they made had a bad gear in them or something and was prone to breaking...... Never had any problems iwth mine and it got pretty much abused.

Depends on what your willing to give. Look at it this way basic junk yard scary non working axles assemblies, $500 minimum. Add gears and install kits, gears $200 install kits $100 plus labor. Right there you got $600 plus labor over $1100 total. Never heard of a gear problem with the gov-locks plus there rebuildable saw an article on it maybe on pirate4x4.com oh and they started making the gov-locks way back so 1975 axles should not have a problem with any gear in the gov-lock. Next best thing is a detroit locker those run $400 plus install not to mention they are quirkie when driving and turning corners. Does it have a rear disc conversion? Those are worth the money if you runs through any mud at all they (discs will clean themselves drums pack full and are useless). Is the rear a full floater those rock litterally all the rock guys run them they are indestructable. Now look at you front does it have flat top knuckles those are better than there old counter parts they are alot more heavy duty, plus you can run cross over steering on lifted trucks that helps tremendously. Does the front have no lock out fronts or good lockouts. The best are Warn hubs they run over a hundred plus install labor. If it has everything I listed they could be worth $2000 if it was new I consider used should be half or a little more that would mean a grand or more. Hope this gave you some insight. Last its only worth what its worth to you no one else. I might give less than you but have a good source on a set of these somewhere see my point.

Here is my two cents.....

I bought a complete 77 K20 minus motor, tranny and t-case for $150. I purchased the truck for the 4:10 geared axles. I rebuilt the 14BFF and added disk brakes for about $300. I am in the process of rebuilding the front Dana 44 and I will have about $300 in that as well. So total price for rebuilt 3/4 ton axles is about $750. When you add the cost for new u-bolts, conversion u-joint etc. I'll have close to $900 in the swap.

Then you have to get new rims at least, probably new tires as well.

The Gov-lok is decent in the 14BFF. In 10 & 12 bolts it might as well be called a grenade, because you will frag it. The only downside about buying a 14BFF with a Gov-lok is that if you ever decided to put in a Detroit, you have to change to an open carrier and set the gears back up.

i see things a little differently....dana 44 front ends are not that hard to find...14ff are even more plentiful most every chevy3/4 or 1 ton had a 14ff from 73 to 88...the 44 was used from 73 till around mid 77 or so in all the blazers 1/2 tons and 3/4 tons...i personally would never pay 500 buks for a 14 bolt...in my area they go for 100 to 175 average price in the buy-n-sell or the little nickel papers....the 44 if all the bearings are good and u-joints and stuff...considering its an early one with external hubs they are weaker and way more expensive than the later internals...isnt worth more than 350 or so...considering also it has no locker... just my opinion..i would go to coloradok5.com or pirate 4x4 boards and look at the for sale sections....
