I don't have the code here, but I would just as soon pop the cover off and count the teeth. The oil is probably older than dirt anyways.

To get the gear ratio, count the teeth of the driven gear, and devide it by the drive gear. I hear there are numbers stamped in them, but i have no idea where to look for them.
As for what else to look for, teeth missing, chips, a funny wear patern...fluid with more metal in it than oil.

The numbers will be stamped along the outside of the ring gear. It will have the ring gear tooth number folloed by the pinion gear tooth number. divide the ring by the pinion and you have your ratio.

Just like what Longhorn Man said has been the easiest for me.
Pull the cover and count the teeth on both the ring gear and the pinion gear. Then divide the number on the ring gear by the number on the pinion and this is your ratio. (e.g. 41 teeth on ring gear, 11 teeth on pinion=3.73 gear ratio.) I usually use a soap stone to mark the teeth also.
