59 dually conversion
I just got a good deal on a set of 16 inch wheels from an 87 1 ton Chev dually.. What kind of problems can I expect when trying to convert my 59 1 ton single rear to accept these wheels? I figured i would need to change to longer studs, but not sure about what else... Thanks in advance!

Re: 59 dually conversion
Only other problem I can think of is the inside tire rubbing the leaf spring. The spring pads are 60.5" on dually trucks.

Re: 59 dually conversion
^yep^. What would be easiest would be to get ahold of a cab&chassis (commercial truck) dual rear end from 73-91. Just a touch narrower but the inners would clear.

Re: 59 dually conversion
My plan WAS to go dually on my '59 3/4 ton. I had a dually rear end located that I was going to put in.

Re: 59 dually conversion
Judging by the flatbed in your pic i think it would look awesome with a dual rear.
Cleaned up with nice wood and paint. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: 59 dually conversion
You'll have to have different front hubs to run the dually wheels on front. There are lots of folks that are interested in switching from duals to singles so you might find someone willing to swap some parts. Check out the Stovebolt page (www.stovebolt.com) and put an ad there and you'll probably find somebody interested.

Re: 59 dually conversion
plus, the newer dually wheels won't clear your brake drums. You'd have to run 2" spacers which would make it even wider.

Re: 59 dually conversion
The wheel hub center is longer on a real dually... long enough to support both wheels at their centers. Your lug nuts simply hold the wheels against drums/rotors. It's the wheel center that supports the weight of the vehicle.
Even though there are kits out there, they all come with the appropriate disclaimers. It's a bad idea to expect only the wheel studs to hold all that weight.

Re: 59 dually conversion
Here's a '57 3800 dually rear hub:
Here's a rear hub from a '70 single wheel C30: The '70 has shorter bolts because it's for a single wheel and a 1" spacer plate. Otherwise they're identical. I'm not sure but I believe that the spacer plate may be there so that 16" dual wheels will clear the drum. Or it could be just to increase the track width by 2" because the '70 trucks were slightly wider than '57's. |
