Re: WTB Front Bearing retianer sm420
I may have a spare in my stash of parts in the parts shed. Will look tomorrow and do some measuring. Do you have any numbers that may help? I know I have a bearing retainer but not sure what it came from.

Re: WTB Front Bearing retianer sm420
I cant get any #'s without pulling the trans. I know the retainer is 4 11/16 inches. 4 bolt holes around it
This is novacks billit design And this is what it looks like on the trans . I dont know much else. I think mine may be cracked as it is leaking 80/90 out the front pretty bad, either that or the seal is bad. I would like to have both seal and retainer when I pull the trans out so I can just fix it and put it back together. Thanks Erik

Re: WTB Front Bearing retianer sm420
Sorry but can't help you on the bearing retainer. Think mine must be for the sm465 as it is a larger at 5 1/8" dia. with four bolt holes, "GM 12" cast into it with " 3920748" stamped on the edge. Sorry to get your hopes up.

Re: WTB Front Bearing retianer sm420
If 70Stovebolt can not help I have this http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=480846 and I can measure it this evening. It was a 4 speed out of a 1967 C20 but I do not know what number it is.

Re: WTB Front Bearing retianer sm420
I don't have one. Todd, those parts look like they might be New Process pieces. What is the casting number on that front bearing retainer?

Re: WTB Front Bearing retianer sm420
I really do not know what the transmission is that I got the parts off of. The transmission case looks like it has a casting #C-95948 D. I need to clean the bearing retainer up and recheck but it looks like it has a casting #97127. I measure it out at 4 5/8" diameter. I found this web site http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge...on_gateway.htm and it states the New Process has an aluminum top cover and this one is cast iron. It also states the SM420 was used up to 1967 and the SM465 were used 1968 and newer. I will get it cleaned tomorrow and get better pictures. Thanks

Re: WTB Front Bearing retianer sm420
I looked at your other thread, and the pics look similar, but if you would could you post a pic of just the front retainer, front and back when you get it cleaned up? I think this is the piece, its supposed to be 4 11/16 so 4 5/8 is dang close. My trans is out of a 67 k20, I think the last year for the 420.

Sucks man. I just took a SM420 for scrap a week ago. No one wanted it.

Re: WTB Front Bearing retianer sm420
Thats just the luck I have. My buddy had one in his jeep that he put in the scrap pile at work about 6 months ago. I keep kicking myself for not getting it. 3rd gear was shot but the rest was good, I didnt even think about getting it for spares. Live and learn I guess.

Re: WTB Front Bearing retianer sm420
Here are some pictures. There are pictures in post 5 of the thread that shows all the parts that are available. If you are interested in all of it $20.00 plus shipping or if you just want this retainer for $10.00 plus shipping. I would need a zip code to figure shipping but I thing everything but the top cover and shift forks will fit in a flat rate box for $11.35 or the bearing retainer by itself will be less. Thanks

Re: WTB Front Bearing retianer sm420
Guys, Todd's trans is a New Process 435 according to the casting number on the case.
The casting number on the front bearing retainer is for GM w/tapered bearing, 1967 according to my books. Sorry Todd, not trying to derail your sale, but if odog is positive he has a SM420 then your cover will not work. The bearing retainer for the SM420 should have a casting number of 3761932.

Re: WTB Front Bearing retianer sm420
Stovebolt, can you de-code the bearing retainer I have in the 4th post to this thread? I haven't been able to find anything on it. GM 12 cast into the housing, 5 1/8" in diameter and has " 3920748" stamped into it. Would be good to know for future reference. Thanks for any help.

Re: WTB Front Bearing retianer sm420
Can't find any info on that number. Do you have the whole transmission? If so I can probably ID it by the casting number off the main case.

Sorry I could not help. I am glad that we did not make a deal on the wrong part. That does not work for either of us.
