Need help determining if my new grille is nos

I purchased what I was told was a nos grille. From the pictures it looked good, but on receiving it I started noticing some slight issues. Why would a nos brace look like this. I have two older ones and they both look like the top picture, but the "nos" one looks like the bottom. There are other things I see and will post later. Could this possibly be a refurbished grille that was re-anodized? Or a reproduction. This does have the chevrolet lettering, so were any repops made with the lettering? Anyone have knowledge of these grilles.

Re: Need help determining if my new grille is nos

There is more to this story. When I received the grille I found an open crack (not hairline) on the seam around the passenger headlight bezel, yet the seam looks pretty straight, which lead me to believe this might be a refurbished grille. Looks good from a distance, but just a few things about the seams and finish, and like the braces that just look weird.

The 1st and 2nd pictures I took and show the crack close up. The 3rd picture is from the seller. If you look closely you can see the crack in his picture as well. You may have to zoom in to see it. This was not disclosed in the listing.

The 4th picture shows the black paint which seems to look weak around the edges. Is this typical of GM quality back then, or is it faded or was it someone that did this. I could see how it might be typical.

Question: Can a reconditioned grille be made to look close to a nos?

I may post more but I may want to first resolve with the seller.

I've heard that a lot of NOS parts are factory blems. Of course I have absolutely no info to back up that statement, so take it for what it's worth.

Re: Need help determining if my new grille is nos

Yes, when most people here about NOS parts, they expect brand new factory parts. The fact is alot of NOS parts can be even worse than reproductions. The Manufactures put aside parts that did not meet factory standards or like mentioned had "blems" or inconsistancies. Years later when people dug up all these parts in warehouses and what not they became today's NOS parts. In fact of heard many stories that and NOS quarter panel didnt fit at all and that a repo fit much better. Thats because the NOS was probably a factory flawed part while the repo was manufactured as close as possible. Something to remember with NOS parts. You just never know what you are going to get. My NOS grille has the letters sprayed on crooked. I expect that's why it was not used or installed many moons ago.

it's a repop . on the original grille the ressed part between the park light and the head bezel extends all the way to the end.

They came both ways out of GM. I expect GM made this change later in there service parts line. I have the same one that does not extend that came new right of of a GM parts box.

Re: Need help determining if my new grille is nos

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but NOS could be old stock repops as well. Not necessarily oem

if you check the price at $900 that 's nos, repops were not allowed to use chevrolet in the grille, and most supplier's will use there box on one end there part number and the other end will be a gm sticker with it's part number. chevrolet just quit making these grilles a few years back and alot of places like lmc, brothers, car and truck shop bought them up.Look at the price differance between the letters vs. no letters.
