Are you installing them? A camshaft and re-curving the ignition.

Carb, intake manifold, and headers are some items that will improve performance, but you may need to consider a better air filter/cleaner and camshaft while you're at it.

Cheap mods are like others mentioned- exhaust upgrade, air cleaner, HEI redone, cam, intake manifold, carb. These you can buy in steps and still be able to use them after you install them.

whats a good carb.

I have a QJet

What is a good intake to buy?

My truck is only going to be used for weekend fun at the Dunes or mountains near by, so should I think about performance or tourque?

Performance or torque...what's the difference??? Since you mentioned dunes and mountains, I assume that's a combo of flat wide open spaces and slow moving hills...yes? If so go for a somewhat equal balance of horsepower and torque. If it's mostly hills, go for more torque than horsepower.
