6.5 turbos?
What kinda trucks are these to drive. I am gonna be buying a ECSB 4x4, and was thinking that a diesel would be kinda cool to have. Can these motors be made to have 800+ trq? What kinda power do they have stock. I have never driven one, the only diesels I have driven were a few cummins in the dodges, they seemed pretty powerful, do the chevs compare? Thanks

6.5 deisel
I don't know what an ECSB 4x4 is but here are the specs on the 2003 Hummer H1 with a 6.5 turbo deisel:
195 HP @ 3400 rpm; 430 lb-ft @ 1800 rpm The GMC's have a Duramax 6600 turbo deisel, 6.6 liter V8 with these specs: 300HP @ 3100 rpm; 520 lb-ft @ 1800 rpm The only deisel I owned was a GMC suburban 2500 with a 6.2 deisel (non-turbo), with 1t axles (ex federal vehicle). It was slow on high inclines but accelerated on a flat area and on the freeway like a gas engine. It pulled my Formula 20' boat on a double axle trailer everywhere with no problem. i've heard people installing a Banks turbo on the 6.2's and they said it made a world of difference going uphill. Ive never tested the Duramax but I heard the 6.2 and the 6.5 are a lot quieter than the Cummins. |

If you're wanting 800 lb. ft torque from a 6.5TD you'll need to do a lot of upgrades. First of all, you'll want to completely eliminate capwalk with a custom made hardened steel web that ties the mains caps together, then find some stronger pistons with a lower compression (around 18:1 is a good guess to start from), stronger connecting rods, ultra high flow injectors, have someone build a custom injection pump, install a huge intercooler+a whole lot bigger turbocharger and so on. Not really worth the time&money, will be cheaper to build a mean BBC.

Why 800 ft lbs of torque? Just to say you have it? Forget the Dodges try a new Ford or Chevy once do the chip and exhaust and you can haul ass even with a heavy load. And if you get traction with those setups watch out its gonna crap out u-joints ou the rear.

I have not heard about the Dodge-sourced Cummins diesels, but my dad works on buses that use the Cummins ISB engine (same engine, may have more or less rated power). They are the reason his BP is so high. He even has a laptop to plug into the ECU, and it doesn't help. The school district he works for is now going to make the slow changeover to Caterpillar diesels. I would stick with a GM or Ford Powerstroke, or Caterpillar if you could find one. Gale Banks offers a ton of stuff to modify diesel engines, they would be a good place to look for power adders.
And now that the price of gas is soaring, diesel looks better and better. around here, it has pretty much stayed steady at $1.50/gallon.

I have driven two 6.5 turbos. The first was a 92 3/4 ton regular cab. It still had a mecanical pump that was turned up 10%. With a 5 speed 3.42 and 33 in. tires I could smoke the tire all the way to third gear. and would surpize those 5.0 mustange's win I would kick their as on the red lights.
Now I drive my dad's 96 1 ton 4x4 crewcab 6.5 with an auto. Its great in the mud we use to pull a 28ft gooseneck in blackland and not get suck and thats loaded with a 13,000 pound tractor. You could get 50ft roster tail off all four tires. as for acceleration its great. The only problem with 94 and newer 6.5's is the brain for the injection pump goes out every 6 to 10 months. I have had mine moved to the fender well to prolong its life to 10 months. I have herd that if you put it on the firewall it will last over a year. I haven't put mine there yet but I will. The new Ford 6.0 powerstrokes have the exact problem. And its a 400 dollar part. |

800+ ft/lbs will mangle a factory spec tranny. I have a friend who works in a driveline shop and is making diesel drive shafts all day long. Not worth the problems it causes. Buy a Peterbuilt.

The 6.5 Turbo's are very nice, not as much HP/Torque as the new 6.6 Durmax, but still a nice Turbo Diesel...
I had a 85 M1009 CUCV Chevrolet Blazer. It had a 6.2D and I loved it, there wasn't anywhere it could not go. A Tractor Trailer took that one from me... -IoWnZa
