Problem starting 71

Hi there new here and have learned a lot from reading thru the post and thank you for it but I'm truly dumb founded I have a 71 chevy with a 350 four bolt main its a brand new crate engine and i just installed it I put everything on her brand new except the distribuator its HEI but it has a new 650 edelbrock carb new alum intake new fuel pump like i said everything is new what my problem is in the morning or after it sits a while it fires up great but after driving around and when I shut it off and go to start it all it does is turn over unless I put it to the floor and she will start checked all vacuum hoses can't find a leak but when its running it seems to be running ok except when I stop at a light it wants to die down sometimes I tried to turn in and adjust mixture screws and they don't do anything for her it doesn't change anything so I'm hoping someone here might be able to give me some pointers and maybe help out.

Yes choke is hooked up it works fine first things in the morning choke is kicking in its after it runs for a little bit and shut down and go to start it back up

Edelbrock carbs have a problem with heat soak when the engine is shut down boiling the gasoline out of the carb, also they tend to be fuel pressure sensitive.

Usually to solve the heat soak problem a phenolic spacer is installed under the carb and to solve the pressure sensitivity a pressure regulator is installed.

First I would go with the phenolic spacer and see if that helps.

my edelbrock gave me same problem you are describing..i put on fuel pressure regulator on and havent had a probllem..think 4psi is the setting...

I havent had any problems with heat soak with a eddie on a aluminum intake but i did with a cast iron one an the spacer helped but thats just me cant realy say for anybody else. my eddie likes a pedal pump or two too start when its really hot.bogging down at lights though sounds like you might have a mis tuned choke and fast idle screw. not the bigger idle screw but the smaller one under the fast idle cam.a plug reading could confirm this.eddie carbs sure dont like too much pump pressure either.

Ok thanks I'll try those whats stumping me is its doing the same thing as the old carb which was a quad and allum intake I replaced everything new when I put new engine in except for the distr and coil thats why I was wondering if the distr might be bad

You may have a vapor lock problem upstream from the engine. Your exhaust may be too close to a fuel line before the fuel pump. Check as it exits the cab and heads forward for any areas where the fuel line crosses over or follows along with the exhaust routing.

Ok this is what I've done I put the spacer I put a new ignition modulator in the distibulator and ran the fuel line straight up where its in between the carb and valve covers and put a new filter but what I see is going on is my fuel is bleeding out of the filter and goes back down thru fuel pump I put a new fuel pump last week when I put the new engine in i sat and watched it the truck will turn over till the gas gets back in the filter and its starts right up so now I need to figure out why its bleeding down.

How hot is your engine running? I had almost the same exact problem with my truck.... Edelbrock card + intake, new crate motor, etc... Turned out the thermostat that came with the motor was way too hot.

Oh heck I'm thinking I put 190 something in it mine didn't come with one and I put it in thinking its 192 194 something like that.

I normally run a 180 degree thermostat in my trucks, including the '92 with a 454.

I had a 195 in mine, and went to a 180. Seemed to help cooling quite a bit, and it's not boiling the gas in my carb anymore...
