trailer lights
i have an 05 silverado, i have 2 boat trailers which i have made sure everything on the trailers as far as lights go is working. As soon as i hook my truck up and hit the brake pedal, all the lights go out? any ideas? also when the turn signal is on, the lights go out when the turn signal is on on my truck and come immediately back on as soon as it goes off on my truck?

Re: trailer lights
the lights on the truck work fine while connected, but when the brake lights on the truck are illuminated, the trailer lights go out, like power gets cut off to the whole harness, as soon as i release the break pedal the trailer lights come right back on! Same whith the turn signals, when they are illuminated on the truck the smae side on the trailer light goes off ! i think it might be a relay on the truck?

Re: trailer lights
okay, replaced the trailer lights with a full replacement light/wiring kit, then replaced all the relays in my fuse box under the hood? The lights still go out when i hit the breaks, but the correspoding side will flash while holding break pedal if i have the turn signal on?

Re: trailer lights
Does your hazard switch work properly?
Believe it or not a ton of wires run through the hazard switch/multifunction turn signal/cruise/wiper/etc. switch. My brother was having a similar issue with the trailer lights on his truck. After tracing all of the wires, checking fuses, relays, etc. we swapped the multifunction switch with the known good one in my truck and it fixed the problem completely. The only sign something had been wrong with his switch was his hazard button was flakey.

Re: trailer lights
Try using a jumper cable to ground the truck to the trailer and see what happens. If that works then start tracing the ground wires. My car trailer would do the same thing and every thing checked out with the ohm meter it turned out the nut was slightly loose on the trailer for the ground wire.

Re: trailer lights
I say hard wire the ground to all the lights on the trailer.
Don't rely on the trailer chassis for ground , especially on a boat trailer. |
