Burning oil smell
Since I got my engine put back together (after a blown head gasket) in my 69 with tbi 350, I'm smelling burning oil. Its only when I'm decelerating. I'm not seeing any drops of oil under the engine or leaking oil on the engine. It doesn't smell like burnt oil (from internally). Any ideas what it could be since I'm only smelling it when I let off the gas?
While I had the engine apart I put in a new oil pump, valve springs and seals along with new engine gaskets obviously. I also put in a new pcv thinking that might be related. |

Re: Burning oil smell
My first thought was a valve cover gasket leaking oil onto an exhaust manifold.... but that wouldn't explain smelling it only when decelerating.
Unless that's the only time the fumes could catch up to you....

Re: Burning oil smell
I used to get that in my TBI camaro all the time, like when I was slowing down on off ramp on highway with windows down. If never had any leaks anywhere. Its definitely a PCV thing or something. Ive noticed it in my truck before too. I wouldnt worry about it unless it starts using oil really bad.
