Transmission cooler recomendations
I hear that these really make a big diffrence and was wonding what everyone is using? I looked into it a little bit and saw two diffrent types, the ones I ahvea lways seen that are like mini raidators and then I saw those straight long ones that look really cool, are those any good?

Well, from my experience I have not had any problems with the Hayden trans cooler that I picked up from Hi/Lo about 6 years ago. I picked out the one used for 10,000 GVWR. The measurements of it are approximately 14" long by 10" high. This is guessing but its pretty close to that dimension.
I looked at the one recommended for 1/2 ton trucks but I felt it was a little on the small side, so I bought one that was bigger. James |

We use the MOROSO aluminum trans cooler, its a finned round heavy aluminum about 5" diameter by 14" long. We mount it on a 1" wide piece of strap steel accross the front of core support behind the grill bar on 67-70 trucks and higher on 71-2. I"m not real impressed on heater core type coolers becaues the fins damage to easily.

Mothertruckers, if you could get some pictures, I'd like that too. I have seen some similar coolers on e-bay going for the $30-40 range. I was wondering if they would work as well as the MOROSO brand? They have them in several lengths too. I was considering putting it along the frame rail, but I like the idea of putting in on the core support.

I got mine from summit a few years back it is a perma cool. I liked it, I had it on my '72 4x4 and it worked great. I am installing it in to my wifies burb now. I have it installed just need to get the lines run. I will post a pic, tonight. If you guys would like ! Landon

I heard you also have to be careful of it keeping the tranny so cool it won't allow it to warm up in Winter climates. Is this true?

The one on ebay looks very simular to the Moroso cooler except the fins and mountings are thicker and they are not polished on the Moroso unit.

I think alot of people balance the heat by adding a external cooler inline with the radiator cooler. The radiator helps it heat up the external helps it cool down. My Chevy Z-71 was that way stock from the factory.

I just mounted a B&M in front of my radiator, I used AN fittings with steel braided hose, put bulkhead fittings on the core support and ran more stainless hose from the core support under the battery to the tranny itself. Looks nice and clean with the fittings and bulkheads make it easy.

I am allso looking into a tranny cooler I read that the moroso finned coolers were not recomended for the street, I cant figure why unless they dont cool enough. The hi-tek b&m coolers sound good because they are stacked aluminum so they cant bend like the cheap ones.

Does anyone know how the moroso coolers proform on the street? I really like the way they look but my truck runs pretty hot, so I will definatly need somthing that can cool good.

So when I find the cooler that will work for me do I just use rubber hose to go from the tranny to the cooler? Right now I ahve some brake line that I bought and bent to go to the radiatior cooler. If somone could give me some instalation tips or point me to a page with some pictures or somthing that would be great. I have been lookin at the B&M coolers but dont know what GVW is or means...Any help would be great thanks.

GVW= Gross Vehicle Weight the total weight of your vehicle. Plus whatever you are towing or hauling in or on the truck including driver and any passengers. Hope this helps.

Not positive but according to what I have for a 1/2 ton SWB with a V-8 it's 3742 lbs. LWB it's 3826 lbs. 3/4 ton LWB it's 4134 lbs. Longhorn is 4189 lbs. I don't know if that is with a big block or not, because it did not say but a 3/4 ton LWB with a 6-cylinder weighs 4001 lbs. That might be close to a big block's weight.

here's a pic of mine, just a generic cooler mounted inline after the stock in the radiator one. My trans temp runs about 150-160 when i'm cruising and about 200-210 in traffic. That's reading the temp of the fluid in the pan.

I have a hayden, stacked-core cooler. I bought the biggest one I could find. It is meant for a motor home. I have a 700R4 transmission and it is recommended to have a very cool fluid for long life. I typically have my trans. temp. just over 100 degrees when it is 90 degrees outside.
You will find that a stacked-core is more efficient and better then the fin and tube coolers. Simply stated, you can use a physically smaller one and have it cool better than the fin and tube. I would recommend getting one that is 20000 GVW or better.
