Re: 72' 2wd tire size?

I currently run 255/55/18's, but would like to do a 285, 295, or 305 when I go to new wheels. This is on the 72' in my sig, rear is lowered about 6-7" at ride height. I do run 1.25" rear spacers because of the offset on my wheels. (Which I bought when it was still a stepside box)

Re: 72' 2wd tire size?

285's looked a little big on the fornt I thought. It has 31's on it now that look big up front but that might change once I decide on the rim to use.

I agree...
I had 285x60x16" on the front and in my humble opinion way to big. I switched to 15" wheels and bought 225x60x15's fro the frontbut--. too small and I will likely end up with 245x60x15" on the front and 275x60c15's on the back. Good luck with your tire selection.

Re: 72' 2wd tire size?

I would never have thought that tire size would be so hard to figure out but every truck I have ever owned has been 4-wheel drive.(Bigger is allways better) This is my first 2-wd and a 72 at that. I would like to get it right the first time given the cost of every thing.

Re: 72' 2wd tire size?

Are you wanting to stay with 15" wheels? Is your truck lowered or do you plan to lower it?

Re: 72' 2wd tire size?

I was thinking that I would go with a 17" or 18" wheel. It has 16.5 steels on it now with 30" tires. It dose have bags on it and I would like to have it ride lowered.

FYI 245/60/15 IS TO SMALL up front they are on my truck now and look tiny(mine is not lowered)
I'll be going to 255/60/15 if I stay at 15"
eye'n 17" rallyes but can't find 17" that are taller than rubberbands and wide
as I like my 295/50/15's in the rear and I'd like a little taller here also

Thanks for the info...
As mentioned 225's are way to small and I need to look at a larger 15" front tire. Why 15's...I want to be period correct as in the 70's 17" and 20" wheels were not available...but I do like the larger wheels on our trucks.

thats why I'm eye'n the 16-17" chevy steel rallye's
unless you really look it'll look ole school.. and I not want to run rubberbands up here (pot hole city)
i'll more than likely stick with 15" as finding tall/wide 16/17 isn't all that easy, nor cheap..

Re: 72' 2wd tire size?

I beleive a 29-30" tire in the rear and a 27-28" front tire looks best on these trucks.

I'm running 17x8 with 255/50/17(28") tires up front and 17x9.5 with 275/55/17(29") tires in the rear with a 3.5/5 drop on my 68. I would liked to have had a slightly taller tire in the front, but it's just hard to find matching staggered tires in 17". I wished I'd went with 18's. 18" tires are much easier to find in the sizes I wanted.

Re: 72' 2wd tire size?

68stepbed I like the way the tires look on your truck. The more I look 18" rims are most likley the way I will go. Pictures help allot, the more the better. Thanks guys.

Re: 72' 2wd tire size?

I think that I finally found the wheels and tires I want on my truck but I'm not sure if the 4.5" back spacing will work. Front's are 17x8 with 235/65 17 (29x9) tire. Rear's are 285/60 17 (30.4x11.4) tire. Will the 11.5 work in the rear and will the 9" wide hit when I turn up front? Thanks for any help.

Re: 72' 2wd tire size?

The 4.5" bs should be fine. Is your truck lowered? If so, how much?

Re: 72' 2wd tire size?

It is set up on bags so the ride height is not really a problem. I would like to have it ride lower but not slammed.

Re: 72' 2wd tire size?

OK the 4.5" backspacing should be fine. In fact it will help tuck the wheel in more to keep the tire from rubbing the outer edges. I'm just worried about the height of the tire. At 29" tall, you may encounter some rubbing, but since it's bagged, you can just raise it up some in the front when driving.

There's a member here, I beleive his board name is "dmwphoto". He was running a similar size tire combo. Try searching and see if you can find the thread he has about his tires and drop.

Re: 72' 2wd tire size?

OK I did a search. Here's the link. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=428284

He actually switched to a 235/60/17 in the front to fix his rubbing issue, so it looks like you will be in good shape.

Re: 72' 2wd tire size?

I hate to beat the whole wheel and tire thing to death but I have another question as well. I went to order my wheels and they don't make the 17x8 wheels. The question that I have is, will a 17x9 4.5 back spacing work with a 27" or 28" tire up front? I really like these wheel and can't seem to find any others I like. Procomp 8101 wheels. Thanks for any help.
