Re: Hotchkis TVS

Hey Portmod7,

I too ordered it but have seen numerous delays in delivery. In fact it's now pushed out to 12/30. Have you had different luck than I?

Re: Hotchkis TVS

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I have some questions and hope someone might be able to clear them up.

1. Is their an advantage to running the 73 ball joint over the 71-72 ball joint?

2. If you run the 73 spindle on the hotchkis tvs kit on a 67-72 C10 which brake kit would you buy from CPP or any other vendor? One for a 67-72 or one for a 73 since your running a 73 spindle? Or does it even matter?

Re: Hotchkis TVS

73 and newer ball joints are cheaper and easier to find. There are light duty truck brakes and heavy duty truck brakes, and all the heavy duty brakes are the same from 71 clear through the 80s with the exception of in the late 70s gm went to metric bolts. Read this for more details on LD and HD brakes and ball joints and tie rod ends:

Re: Hotchkis TVS

Parts will be more readily available and cheaper with the 73-87. Later ball joints are also larger diameter, so potentially stronger.

Re: Hotchkis TVS

If you run the CPP modular spindle, then you can run the larger disc brake systems from Baer and Wilwood.

Re: Hotchkis TVS

So the front brakes on a 71-87 are the same? Does anyone know about the rear?
Was wondering if I bought this kit:
http://www.classicperform.com/Store/...2FRBK-BB-R.htm

It appears the front would be ok right? What about the rear?

Re: Hotchkis TVS

Yes they are, with the exception of the LD vs HD and the swap to metric banjo fittings around 1981. Rear brake mounting is same. You will need 5-lug axles...

Re: Hotchkis TVS

My 71 has 5 lug front and rear.
So it sounds like i'm ok to order the cpp front and rear brake kit for my year (71) since the spindle for the 73 is the same but only uses a different. Ball joint.

Re: Hotchkis TVS

For those who have the hotchkis tvs kit, what spring rates front and rear seem to be best? Truck wil probably be driven 75 street and 25% track (maybe). Thanks in advance.

Re: Hotchkis TVS

I believe they only come with one spring rate.

4” Front Lowered Front Springs, 1100 lbs/in for optimum handling balance
6” Lowered Rear Springs, 380 lbs/in for optimum handling balance

Sorry PurdRob, I guess I should subscribe to threads I post in.

My order was shipped the same day I ordered it, and I received it within a week. Sorry to hear you're having trouble. One good thing about Summit, they WILL make it right...

Re: Hotchkis TVS

Earlier in this thread I was advised to run the 73-87 stock height spindle.

I just received an email from CPP today that you can not run a big brake kit with a stock height spindle =(

No sure how to achieve big brakes with a stock height spindle.

Re: Hotchkis TVS

I would see what that orange truck in the videos for Hotchkis is running. I am sure that truck has big brakes, and ask what spindles they are running. I think that truck has a good stance.

Re: Hotchkis TVS

I think I found my answer. The member PCHRODS truck has a nice stance.

In looking at the TVS kit it comes with a 4" lowered front spring.

Here is a quote from PCHRODS about his setup:

"Great question!! and the answer is "yes", we are using a 2" drop spindle and our own 2" drop spring for a big block, because the first run of Hotchkis TVS kits are for small block equipped trucks (front spring rate on the Hotchkis kit is for a small block truck.) but all the parts are usable on BB trucks, just the front springs are for small blocks, softer rate. You will want to get the shock relocation brackets at the same time, this corrects the angle and geometry on the shocks in a lowered application, which allows them to operate correctly!!"
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=432310&page=3

So if I order the Hotchkis kit I need to ask them for the 2" lowered front spring. (Not the 4" the kit typically comes with)
I can then run a 73-87 2" drop spindle and then be able to run the big disc brakes. Right? Sorry if this is all repetitive, just want to order the correct components the first time.

Re: Hotchkis TVS

You know about Wilwood's D52 calipers right? They bolt right in place of the stock caliper and are a four piston design with a pretty good piston area. I know it's not the same as "big brakes", but it's a pretty good improvement over stock with some performance brake "bling" and a reasonable price tag.

With the Hotchkis kit I believe a little bit of the improvement in front geometry comes from getting the lower control arm more parallel to the ground. That's why they intend for you to use a stock spindle and get all the drop from the spring. I think you'd be compromising some handling improvement by using a drop spindle. Just something to think about. Might call Hotchkis and talk to them.

Re: Hotchkis TVS

Nice, that is good that they will swap the springs for you. So, now you can go with that CPP modular spindle and open up the options for brakes. Let me know if I can help you out with that. We are an authorized Baer and Wilwood dealer.

Potmod7:
The D52 is a great replacement for the stock caliper, and definitely a good way to get better braking at a more affordable price. It is a 2 piston caliper.

Re: Hotchkis TVS

I'm not sure if they will swap out the 4" spring for the 2", it was just a thought since they have 2" srpings listed on their site. I will have to ask them and see if there is an advantage or disadvantage to running a 2" drop spring with a 2" drop spindle vs just a 4" drop spring.

Re: Hotchkis TVS

djw32, I'm not 100% on if it is a 2" or a 2.5" but Pchrods quote in my post above states he is using a 2" drop spindle.

I received a response from hotchkis regarding using a 2" drop spindle and 2" drop front spring vs a 4" drop spring only.

I also asked if they would swap out the 4" drop spring for a 2" drop spring when you buy the kit.

sales@hotchkis.net writes:
There is no problem with the 2+2 drop. We would not swap them out, but you can buy the parts separately so you would get the right parts on your first purchase.

Re: Hotchkis TVS

How 'bout the kit plus 2" spindles and 2" blocks for a 6/8 drop?
